1.2.29

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.29

अर्थस् तु विधिशेषत्वाद् यथा लोके

arthas tu vidhiśeṣatvād yathā loke

The line

But there is a point, because it is the remainder of the injunction, as in the world.

नेपालीमा

तर तात्पर्य छ, किनकि त्यो विधिको बाँकी हो, लोकमा जस्तै।

Where it sits

Tu answers vyarthe in 1.2.28. Vidhiśeṣa (विधिशेष) is the vākyaśeṣa (वाक्यशेष) of 1.2.22, now said of the basket sentence. Loka is used on the side of the reply. The basket remains the thing praised.

Split: arthaḥ (अर्थः) + tu (तु) + vidhi-śeṣatvāt (विधि-शेषत्वात्) + yathā (यथा) + loke (लोके)

loke (लोके)locative singular, masculinein the world

The phrases

On the praise reading there is a point. The sentence is then the remainder of the injunction. As we know that food is made with a winnowing basket, the text says 'by that food is made,' and speaks of the accomplished work in the present tense in order to praise it.

Ordinary speech does this without requiring the supreme case. 'Devadatta is strong, he overpowers Yajñadatta (यज्ञदत्त) and the others.' The word strong is not used by comparison with a lion. It is used by comparison with men weaker than Devadatta. So the basket is praised as a food-maker beside poorer tools. It is not being certified as the one real producer of food. The fault of praising a nothing belongs to the view that tried to make the sentence a reason-command, not to the praise reading.

Sanskrit in this line

Arthaḥ (अर्थः) here is purpose, the answer to useless. Śeṣatva (शेषत्व) is the state of being the remainder. Yathā (यथा) loke is as in ordinary life.

Say it back

Give the ordinary picture: a man is called strong beside weaker men. The basket is praised that way.
