1.2.42

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.42

परिसंख्या

parisaṃkhyā

The line

As for a restrictive enumeration, that is not the construction.

नेपालीमा

सीमित गन्तीको कुरा हो भने, त्यो बनावट होइन।

Where it sits

The mantra sentence about the halter, first cited in 1.2.31, is still the subject. Parisaṃkhyā (परिसंख्या) is the reading the objector gave it. The meaningful sentence of 1.2.40 is what names the horse's halter directly.

parisaṃkhyā (परिसंख्या)nominative singular, femininea restrictive enumeration, a count that excludes the rest

The phrases

The objector said that 'they took this, the halter of the horse' would be a parisaṃkhyā (परिसंख्या), a restrictive count, and that a restrictive count carries three faults. It would enjoin its own object, imagine a further object, and cancel something already obtained.

The connection is not 'only this is taken.' From the word halter alone, a halter of any animal could have been reached. The direct sentence names the horse's halter. While that sentence is there, the wider inference is not there. A donkey's halter never comes in, so it does not have to be excluded. The line names the restrictive count in order to set that reading aside.

Sanskrit in this line

Parisaṃkhyā (परिसंख्या) is feminine. In this teaching it is an enumeration that restricts, not a mere total. One word is the whole line, and the refusal is carried by the argument around it.

Say it back

Explain the halter in plain words: the sentence names the horse's. It does not first allow every rope and then ban the donkey's.
