1.2.48

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.48

विद्यावचनमसंयोगात्

vidyāvacanam asaṃyogāt

The line

It is a statement of study, because it is not connected with the rite.

नेपालीमा

त्यो अध्ययनको कथन हो, किनकि त्यो कर्मसँग जोडिएको छैन।

Where it sits

This answers the svādhyāya (स्वाध्याय) argument of 1.2.37. Vidyā (विद्या) is study, as in 1.2.15 the knowledge was what got praised. Saṃyoga (संयोग) is the connection with the sacrifice. Its absence classifies the boy's recitation. It does not classify the mantra in the rite.

Split: vidyā-vacanam (विद्या-वचनम्) + asaṃyogāt (असंयोगात्)

The words

WordGrammarSense
vidyā-vacanam (विद्या-वचनम्)nominative singular, neuterthe statement belonging to study, the recitation by which the text is learned
asaṃyogāt (असंयोगात्)ablative singular, masculinebecause there is no connection with the rite

The phrases

The boy who recites during svādhyāya (स्वाध्याय) is not at the moment of the rite, and he is not trying to illuminate the offering. The recitation is a statement of study because it is not connected with the sacrifice.

The challenge was that he practices syllables and not meaning. The meaning is easy, so it is not what he drills. The syllables are hard to grasp, so they are what he repeats. That division belongs to study. It does not show that the mantra, when it is used in the rite, is a meaningless sound.

Sanskrit in this line

Asaṃyoga (असंयोग) is the negation of saṃyoga (संयोग). The ablative gives the reason for calling the recitation vidyāvacanam (विद्यावचनम्).

Say it back

Separate the student's daily repetition from the mantra spoken during the offering.
