Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.4.16

परार्थत्वाद् गुणानाम्

parārthatvād guṇānām

The line

Because qualities are for the sake of something else, they do not force the principal rite to be repeated.

नेपालीमा

गुण अर्काका लागि हुने भएकाले तिनीहरूले मुख्य कर्म दोहोर्याउन बाध्य पार्दैनन्।

Where it sits

guṇānām (गुणानाम्) are the All-gods as a supposed quality of the Vaiśvadeva (वैश्वदेव), still the topic from 1.4.13. parārthatvāt (परार्थत्वात्) is why a subsidiary does not command the principal. This closes the name-reading of that rite.

The phrases

Qualities exist for something else. They cannot make the principal offering turn a second time. The offering is done once. It is not repeated in order to make room for a deity.

The deities are already accepted, so there is no conflict that would force a second performance. In the one principal offering, a count of thirty oblations is spoken of. That count of oblations into the offertorial fire does not become a reason to repeat the offering. The word remains the name of the rite.

Sanskrit in this line

parārthatvāt (परार्थत्वात्) before a voiced consonant is heard as parārthatvād (परार्थत्वाद्). The compound is para plus artha plus the abstract tva. The thirty oblations are Śabara (शबर)'s detail of this offering. The line itself only gives the reason.

Say it back

Say that a quality cannot make the Vaiśvadeva (वैश्वदेव) be performed twice, and that the word is the name.
