And there is a designation of that rite by the known thing, so the word is a name.

Where it sits
ca adds this sign to the other-text sign of 1.4.4. tad is the rite. vyapadeśa (व्यपदेश) is the later sentence that applies the ordinary word to it. The three hostile rites are the matter. Their steps are not given.
Split: tad-vyapadeśam (तद्-व्यपदेशम्) + ca (च)

The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tad-vyapadeśam (तद्-व्यपदेशम्) | nominative singular, neuter | a designation of that |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
The phrases
The sentences are: this man, proceeding against an enemy, should sacrifice with the hawk. With the tongs. With the cow. The doubt is name or quality.
The first view says quality. Udbhid could name an offering because its parts speak of an action. Hawk, tongs, and cow are class-words. On that view they cannot name an offering, so they enjoin a material.
The decision: there is a designation of the rite by the thing already known. A later sentence says the hawk swoops and takes, and so does this rite take the enemy of the man against whom it is used. The word is applied to the offering by that likeness, as a man is called a lion. The tongs are the hard taking. The cow is the watching of one's own. In the name-reading the instrumental is construed directly with the offering. The quality-reading would indicate a material indirectly. The direct construal is the stronger one. So each word is the name of the rite.
Sanskrit in this line
tadvyapadeśam (तद्व्यपदेशम्) is neuter nominative, though the ending looks like an accusative. In the sūtra (सूत्र) it is the thing found, a designation, and ca joins it to the preceding signs. The anusvāra (अनुस्वार) before ca is the neuter ending.
Say it back
Say that the hawk, the tongs, and the cow name rites of hostile intent, by a likeness stated in a later sentence.
