Vaiśeṣika (वैशेषिक) Sūtra (सूत्र)
Executive summary
The Vaiśeṣika (वैशेषिक) Sūtra (सूत्र) is the book of particularity. A viśeṣa (विशेष) is the last distinction by which one atom is not another. This book counts six categories: substance, quality, action, the common, the particular, and inherence. Substance is ninefold, from earth to the self and the mind. The self is a substance, not a bundle of thoughts. Ten books move from dharma and the categories to the qualities, to knowing, and to the close on the Veda.

Vaiśeṣika (वैशेषिक) is the system of particularity. The book is the Vaiśeṣika-sūtra (वैशेषिक-सूत्र) of Kaṇāda (कणाद). A viśeṣa (विशेष) is a particular, the last distinction by which one atom is not another. The later handbook people study beside these sūtras (सूत्र) is Praśastapāda (प्रशस्तपाद)'s Padārtha-dharma-saṃgraha (पदार्थ-धर्म-संग्रह). The sitting stays with Kaṇāda (कणाद)'s line.
The categories in this book are six: substance, quality, action, the common, the particular, and inherence. Later Vaiśeṣika (वैशेषिक) adds absence as a seventh. Do not put that seventh into a sūtra (सूत्र) that does not say it.
Substance is ninefold: earth, water, fire, air, ether, time, space, the self, and the mind. The first four are made of atoms. The self is a substance, not a bundle of thoughts. That is the claim Nyāya (न्याय) and Vaiśeṣika (वैशेषिक) share, and the claim the Buddhist schools refused.
This text has 369 sūtras (सूत्र) in ten books. The file is missing some spaces. A sitting joins the standard line and says so.
369 of 369 lines are written out word by word.
