A human life in the Nepali hills and valleys is never lived as an isolated biological accident; it is consecrated as an unbroken pilgrimage of refinement. The Sanskrit word saṃskāra (संस्कार) literally signifies to polish, refine, sanctify, and imprint sacred impressions upon the soul. From the instant of conception and the first cry of birth to the final flame lit beside sacred waters, sixteen classical milestones mark the passage of mortal clay into spiritual maturity. Each rite cleanses accumulated physical dross, harmonizes the individual with the cosmos, binds the individual to the family lineage (kula), and weaves the living into debt-free harmony with ancestors, society, and the gods.
1. Nwaran: The Naming and Sun-Seeing on the Eleventh Day (Nāmākaraṇa /
For ten nights following childbirth, the household resides within the sacred quarantine of birth impurity (sūtaka, सूतक), a time when ordinary ritual worship pauses so that mother and newborn may remain shielded from the outer world. On the eleventh morning (traditionally on the ninth day for baby girls in several hill communities, or celebrated as Macabu Benke among the Newars), the family priest arrives to perform the rite of purification and naming: the Nwāran (Sanskrit: Nāmākaraṇa).
The domestic altar is consecrated with cow-dung and red clay. The priest sprinkles Panchagavya (पञ्चगव्य—the five purifying gifts of the cow: milk, curd, ghee, cow-urine / gā̃ut, and cow-dung wash) alongside sanctified Ganges water over the chambers, the family, and the infant, dissolving the sūtaka and re-establishing ritual purity. The mother gently carries the baby across the wooden threshold (saṅghāra, सङ्घार) out into the open courtyard, turning the infant's face toward the sky to witness the golden morning sun for the very first time (sūrya-darśana, सूर्यदर्शन), praying that the child's life be filled with radiant health and luster.
Consulting the ancient astrological ephemeris (pātro), the Jyotiṣi calculates the precise constellation (nakṣatra) and quarter (caraṇa) governing the exact moment of birth, generating the child's two distinct names:
- Rāśi ko nām (राशीको नाम): The sacred astrological birth-name, derived from the presiding planetary syllable (nāmakṣara). The priest whispers this name three times into the baby's right ear through a betel leaf (pān) or a golden ring, shielding it in secrecy for life-cycle rituals, astrological charts, marriage alliances, and ancestral śrāddhas.
- Bolāune nām (बोलाउने नाम): The public worldly name selected by parents and relatives, celebrated with sweets, song, and registered before the community.
Before the ceremony closes, the priest blesses a protective amulet-cord dyed with turmeric and mustard flowers (Rakṣāsūtra / nwāran ko doro, न्वारानको डोरो), tying it around the infant's tender wrists, ankles, and waist. Consecrated with Vedic mantras, the thread acts as an unbroken shield against envious eyes, unseen malevolent spirits, and sudden illnesses.
2. Pāsnī: The First Grain and Divination Tray (Annaprāśana /
For the first several months, an infant is nourished exclusively by mother's milk. Pāsnī (the classical Sanskrit Annaprāśana, अन्नप्राशन) marks the momentous threshold where the child tastes the fruits of the soil and cooked grain for the first time. The calendar is observed with strict astrological precision: the fifth month for baby girls and the sixth month for baby boys, selecting an auspicious lunar day (sāita) during the waxing moon (Śuklapakṣa).
The infant is bathed in fragrant herbs and adorned like a little prince or princess: dressed in scarlet velvet or pure silk embroidered with golden thread, wearing a traditional Dhaka topī and tiny silver anklets with tinkling bells (cā̃dī ko kallī, चाँदीको कल्ली) to announce every kick. The supreme privilege of offering the very first taste belongs to the maternal uncle (māmā, मामा), representing the protective maternal lineage. Using a silver spoon or a pure gold coin dipped in sweet milk-rice pudding (khīra, खीर), the uncle feeds the baby, followed by the paternal aunt (phupū), grandparents, and kin, each offering blessings and coins.
Then unfolds the ancient divination tray. A massive polished bronze plate is set upon the carpet before the seated baby, displaying four symbolic instruments of destiny:
- A sacred book or pen: Signifying knowledge, wisdom, scholarship, and civil service.
- A gold ornament or silver coin: Signifying commercial prosperity, wealth, and enterprise.
- A lump of fertile soil or clay: Signifying land ownership, agriculture, ancestral stability, and devotion to the earth.
- A tool, miniature sword, or knife: Signifying courage, craftsmanship, engineering, defense, and righteous duty.
Surrounded by breathless anticipation, the baby crawls forward. Whichever artifact the tiny hands grasp first is met with affectionate cheers and laughter, taken by the family as a joyful omen of the child's natural temperament and future calling in the world.
3. Bratabandha: The Staff, the Thread, and the Run to Kashi (Upanayana /
Between the ages of eight and twelve, a boy undergoes his spiritual second birth (dvija) through the rite of Bratabandha (Sanskrit: Upanayana, meaning to draw near to the sacred teacher). The boyhood years of carefree play conclude as the youth takes upon his shoulders the moral vows of studenthood (Brahmacarya), ritual purity, and intellectual discipline.
The morning begins with the Chhewar (tonsure): seated in a cow-shed or courtyard upon straw mats, the maternal uncle (māmā) carefully shaves the boy's head, leaving only the sacred crown-tuft (śikhā / tupī, टुप्पी), the biological antenna preserving spiritual energy. Stripping away all sewn worldly garments, the boy dons the ancient Vedic attire of an ascetic student: an unstitched loincloth (kaupīna), a deerskin sash (mṛgacarma), a sacred waist-cord woven of triple-stranded muñja grass, a yellow wrap (pahẽlo dosallā), and a sacred staff carved from Palāśa or bamboo wood (Brahmadaṇḍa).
Taking a brass begging bowl and cloth pouch (jholī) in hand, the newly ordained celibate approaches his mother, aunts, and sisters, reciting the ancient Sanskrit entreaty: "Bhavati bhikṣāṃ dehi" (भवति भिक्षां देहि—"Noble lady, grant me alms"). The women heap his bag with unhusked rice, coins, and fruit, signifying that a seeker of sacred knowledge must live without pride, dependent upon the generosity of the community.
Then ensues the theatrical centerpiece of the day: the Run to Kashi Declaring that worldly society is an illusion, the boy firmly announces his intention to renounce home and walk south to Varanasi (Kashi) to pursue lifelong asceticism. Grasping his wooden staff, umbrella, and bag, he marches resolutely down the road toward the village boundary. In an orchestrated panic, the maternal uncle runs after him, intercepts him at the crossroad, and presents him with new clothes, leather shoes, coins, a modern wristwatch, and sweet promises, coaxing him to return. The uncle argues that preserving the sacred household (Gṛhasthāśrama), raising children, and maintaining the domestic altar is as holy as forest renunciation. The boy relents and returns home to joyous music.
Finally, under a golden-yellow silk shawl held over their heads away from public gaze, the father or Guru leans close to the boy's right ear and whispers the eternal, sun-adoring Gāyatrī Mantra (Oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ...). The sacred triple-stranded thread (Janai, जनै)—representing the three cosmic debts to gods, sages, and ancestors, and the mastery of body, speech, and mind—is laid across his left shoulder to hang across the right torso. From that hour, he is an adult in dharma.
The young initiate must now perform his daily Sandhyāvandana prayers, maintain ritual cleanliness, and honor the sacred thread throughout his earthly life.
4. A Girl's Triad: Ihī, Gunyo-Colo, and Gufā (Strī-Saṃskāra /
While young men receive the sacred thread, the women of Nepal pass through their own profound lifecycle initiations, preserving physical sovereignty, biological dignity, and social adulthood. Across the Kathmandu valley and the hill ridges, three distinct ceremonies protect and honor womanhood:
- Ihī / Bel-bibaha (ईही / बेल-विवाह): Practiced among the Newar civilization before puberty. The young girl is spiritually wedded to Lord Suvarṇa Kumāra (an immortal manifestation of Lord Viṣṇu / Nārāyaṇa), with the golden wood-apple fruit (Bel / Aegle marmelos) serving as the divine witness. Because her eternal husband is immortal, incorruptible, and divine, a Newar woman can spiritually never be widowed in earthly life; should her mortal human spouse perish later, her eternal bond to the Divine remains unbroken.
- Bārhā Tayegu / Gufā (गुफा बस्ने / बाह्रा तयेगु): At the onset of menarche (first menstruation), the young maiden is placed in a secluded chamber for twelve days, entirely shielded from male eyes and direct sunlight. Far from a punishment, this is a sacred feminine retreat: aunts, grandmothers, and elder sisters attend to her, massaging her with mustard oil, feeding her sweet rice and rich nutrients, and initiating her into the lore, arts, and bodily rhythms of adult womanhood. On the twelfth morning before dawn, she is bathed in sanctified water, dressed in rich bridal crimson, and led blindfolded outside to gaze upon the rising Sun God (Sūrya-darśana), offering Arghya and receiving gifts from her father and brothers.
- Gunyo-Colo (गुन्यू-चोली): Celebrated around the age of seven or eight in Khas-Arya and hill communities. The child sheds her little-girl frocks and receives her very first adult female attire: the pleated wraparound ankle-length skirt (gunyo), the fitted blouse (colo), the protective woven waist-sash (paṭukā), and the graceful head-shawl (majetro), complemented with gold earrings and glass bangles. It is a joy-filled threshold of family pride, symbolizing feminine modesty, beauty, and domestic maturity.
Through these rites, the daughter of the home is grounded in dignity, knowing her physical transitions are sacred and celebrated by the whole clan.
5. Vivāha: The House Wedding, Kanyādāna, and the Hearth (Vivāha-Saṃskāra /
A traditional Nepali wedding is never a legal contract; it is a sacred alignment witnessed by Lord Agni, the living flame of sacrifice. It unites two ancestral lineages (kula) in perpetual solidarity through an intricate choreography of devotion, sacrifice, and festive joy:
- Swayamvara (स्वयंवर): The bride and groom circle each other and exchange garlands woven of immortal Dūbo grass (Cynodon dactylon). Because Dūbo grass never withers even under scorching sun, it is the universal symbol of enduring, evergreen affection.
- Kanyādāna (कन्यादान): The emotional sanctum of the day. Seated before a massive bronze basin (kā̃s ko thāl), the bride's parents wash their daughter's and son-in-law's feet with consecrated milk and Ganges water. The father places his daughter's cupped hand into the groom's, reciting: "Viṣṇu-svarūpāya varāya..." (To the groom who is Lord Viṣṇu manifest, I surrender this daughter who is Goddess Lakṣmī). It is not an abandonment; it is the highest spiritual offering a father can make, transferring the light of his hearth to another lineage.
- Lājā Homa (लाजा होम): The bride's brother places handfuls of puffed roasted paddy (dhān ko lājā) into his sister's palms. With the groom standing behind her guiding her wrists, she offers the popped grain into the leaping fire, praying for peace, offspring, and overflowing granaries in her new home.
- Saptapadī (सप्तपदी): Together, bride and groom take seven steps around the sacred fire, sealing seven mutual vows: for food and nourishment, physical vitality, righteous wealth, mutual joy, noble progeny, seasonal harmony, and unbreakable lifelong friendship.
- Sindūra and Pote (सिन्दूर र पोते): Beneath a sacred white cloth held aloft by the brothers, the groom applies holy vermilion powder (sindūra) along the bride's hair parting from forehead to crown, and ties the green glass-bead necklace (pote) around her throat, sealing her status as a married woman (Saubhāgyavatī).
- Ghar-bhitraune (घरभित्राउने): When the wedding procession reaches the groom's ancestral threshold (saṅghāra, सङ्घार), a bronze measuring vessel (mānā) brimming with raw rice is placed in the doorway. With the tip of her right foot, the bride gently tips the container inward, letting the golden grains spill across the floor—signifying that her arrival brings unending abundance into the house.
- Pāni-Chalaune / Bhānsā-Bhitraune (पानी चलाउने र भान्सा-भित्राउने): On the following morning, the bride enters the inner kitchen and hearth (chulho). She cooks and serves food or water to her parents-in-law and family elders, who eat from her hands, formally accepting her into the clan's culinary and ancestral communion.
- Dulhan-Pharkāune / Maitī-Pharkāune (दुलहन फर्काउने / माइती फर्कने): A few days later, the groom accompanies his bride back to her maternal home (Maitī) for a celebratory feast, reaffirming that marriage does not sever maternal love, but creates an enduring bridge of honour between two families.
6. Dahī-Ciurā: The Maternal Blessing of Pregnancy (Garbha-Saṃskāra /
Long before a child breathes the air of the hills, the mother is cocooned in maternal reverence through the ceremony of Dahī-Ciurā (feeding curd and beaten rice). Embedded in the ancient Vedic prenatal rites—Garbhādhāna (conception), Puṃsavana (fostering fetal vigor), and Sīmantonnayana (parting the expectant mother's hair to bestow mental tranquility)—this Nepali hill tradition takes place in the seventh, eighth, or ninth month of pregnancy.
The expectant daughter is invited back to her maternal home (Maitī) and seated upon a colorful ceremonial mat (cakaṭī). A broad bronze plate is heaped with rich, thick whole-milk yogurt, fresh beaten rice (ciurā), seasonal sweet fruits, roasted meats or seasoned vegetables, and every special delicacy the mother has craved during her pregnancy (dohada, दोहद). Relatives apply crimson vermilion to her forehead, drape a new silk sari across her shoulders, present baby garments, and pray to Goddess Ṣaṣṭhī for an effortless, pain-free delivery. The rite gently reassures the expectant mother: no matter the responsibilities of her marital home, her maternal hearth remains an unconditional sanctuary of love.
7. Janma and Sutkerī: Postnatal Care, Chhaiṭī, and Sūtaka (Janma-Sutkerī /
When the cries of newborn life first echo through the house, the ordinary rhythm of labor halts. The mother enters a sacred postpartum retreat as a sutkerī (सुत्केरी), insulated within a quiet, draft-free room where warmth, seclusion, and dedicated care guard both mother and infant during their most tender threshold. Immediately upon delivery, traditional elder women perform the micro-rite of Jātakarman (जातकर्मन्): touching a tiny droplet of honey and clarified butter to the infant's tongue with a golden ring before nursing, praying that the child be blessed with intellectual clarity and a sweet tongue.
Postnatal healing follows a rigorous Ayurvedic regimen: the mother is massaged daily with warmed mustard oil (torī ko tel) beside a brazier of hot coals (makal), fed nourishing bowls of hot carom-seed broth (jwāno ko jhol, ज्वाँनोको झोल) to restore uterine tone and stimulate rich lactation, and sustained with herbal jaggery confections (sutkerī masālā and ghyū-chāku). For ten days, the family observes sūtaka (birth impurity), refraining from temple visits and sacrificial fires while the household dedicates itself entirely to caring for mother and child.
On the sixth night following birth, the household observes Chhaiṭī (छैठी). Lore holds that at the midnight hour, Goddess Vidhātā / Ṣaṣṭhī (विधाता / षष्ठी माता) enters the room invisible to human eyes to inscribe the newborn's destiny (bhāgya-lekhā) upon its forehead. A brass oil lamp (dīyo) is kept burning throughout the dark night, accompanied by a clean reed pen, an inkpot, a blank sheet of paper, and a silver coin placed beside the sleeping infant, so that the Goddess may write a lifespan rich in virtue, wisdom, and honor.
On the eleventh day, the sūtaka is formally dissolved through the holy water of Nwāran, welcoming the newborn into the clan.
8. Childhood Rites: Chhewar, Ear-Piercing, and First Letters (Bālya-Saṃskāra /
The years bridging weaning and adolescence are vibrant with formative community rites. Far from an empty span, childhood in Nepal is woven with three vital ceremonies that integrate the young into bodily discipline, tribal lineage, and sacred learning:
- Chhewar / Cūḍākaraṇa (छेवर / बुसाखा): For many communities—including Newars, Gurungs, Magars, Rais, Limbus, Tamangs, and hill Chhetris—the boy's first haircut is celebrated as an independent, standalone lifecycle rite at age three, five, or seven. The maternal uncle (māmā) cuts the boy's childhood locks in a sacred courtyard or cowshed, leaving only the crown-tuft (tupī), and gifts him a calf, traditional clothes, and blessings, formally affirming the maternal clan's lifelong guardianship.
- Ear and Nose Piercing: Karṇavedha & Nāsikāvedha (कान र नाक छेड्ने): A traditional health and beauty rite. In early childhood, boys have their earlobes pierced for small gold rings (murkī or kundala), an Ayurvedic practice believed to activate acupressure points that enhance intellect and regulate bodily humors. For young girls, piercing the earlobes for earrings (mundrī / cā̃p) and the left nostril for a tiny gold stud (phulī or bulākī) marks the threshold of feminine grace, beauty, and auspicious adornment.
- Akṣarārambha / Vidyārambha on Saraswati Puja (अक्षराम्भ र विद्यारम्भ): On Basanta Pañcamī / Śrī Pañcamī in the month of Magh, toddlers between three and five years of age are dressed in yellow and brought to Saraswati temples or seated before the domestic altar. With chalk (khari-dhūṅgā) or a reed pen, parents and teachers gently guide the child's tender finger to trace the first sacred syllables—"Oṃ", "A", "Ka"—upon slate boards (pāṭī) or stone temple walls, initiating the child into the lifelong ocean of literacy and wisdom.
In this manner, the middle years of domestic life (Gṛhasthāśrama) nurture the child toward adolescence and adult duty.
9. Bhīmaratha: The First Ascent of Elderhood (Bhīmaratha /
When human life journeys past the three-quarter century mark, the tone of household rites shifts from worldly enterprise toward spiritual transcendence. In the ancient Newar civilization of the Kathmandu valley, elderhood is sanctified not as a burden, but as a five-stage ascent into living divinity (Janku, जंकू). The very first of these sacred rungs is celebrated as Bhīmaratha (भीमरथारोहण).
Observed precisely when an elder reaches seventy-seven years, seven months, and seven days of age, Bhīmaratha honors the elder for having weathered the turbulent storms of mortal existence. Dressed in ceremonial garments and surrounded by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, the aging parent is seated upon a decorated seat and worshipped with flowers, vermilion, and Vedic chants. This rite marks the peaceful gateway leading toward the thousand full moons, preparing the clan for the public chariot procession of Chaurāsī.
10. Chaurāsī Pūjā, Sahasracandra, and the Five Janku Rungs (Sahasracandra-Darśana /
The grand pinnacle of longevity in Nepal is commemorated through two harmonious traditions: the Khas-Arya celebration of Chaurāsī Pūjā (चौरासी पूजा) at eighty-four years, and the Vedic milestone of Sahasracandra-darśanam (सहस्रचन्द्रदर्शनम्—witnessing one thousand full moons), which occurs astronomically at approximately eighty-three years, four months, and four days (accounting for 1,000 synodic lunar cycles). In the hills, completing eighty-four solar years signifies that the soul has successfully traversed the 8.4 million forms of worldly transmigration (chaurāsī lākh yoni), attaining liberation from the cycle of rebirth while still breathing upon earth.
On this sacred morning, ordinary mortality falls away and the elder is elevated to living godhood:
- Veneration as a Living Deity (Jīvanta Devatā): The elder is bathed in sanctified waters gathered from sacred rivers, anointed with sandalwood, and dressed in regal brocade silks with a golden or brocade turban. Henceforth, the elder is venerated as a living embodiment of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, or Śiva.
- Ratha-ārohaṇa (The Chariot Procession): The elder is seated within a resplendent wooden chariot (ratha) or palanquin (ḍolī). Four generations—sons, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—grasp the thick ropes and pull their ancestral patron through the village streets, accompanied by horns, cymbals, and the triumphant music of the Pañcebājā.
- Cessation of Obeisance (Dhog Phukne): An extraordinary social reversal occurs: the elder never bows or touches the feet of anyone again. Kings, prime ministers, high priests, and family elders all bow down to touch the feet of the elder, receiving blessings from one who has crossed mortal limits.
- Renewal of Marriage (Punar-vivāha, पुनर्विवाह): If the spouse is still living, the elderly couple re-enacts their wedding vows. Dressed once more as bride and groom surrounded by their own descendants, they exchange flower garlands and celebrate their lifelong partnership.
- Tulā-dāna (तुलादान): In deeply devout households, the elder is seated upon a massive balance scale and weighed against an equal measure of food grains, raw sugar, brass, silver, or cow's milk, which is then distributed in charity to the poor and cows to dissolve all remaining karmic debts.
The Newar Janku (जंकू): Five Rungs to Divinity
The Newar civilization developed five progressive chariot ascents (Janku) as the human elder merges into the divine:
- Bhīmaratha-rohaṇa: At 77 years, 7 months, and 7 days.
- Candraratha-rohaṇa (Chaurāsī): At 83 years, 4 months, and 4 days (or 84), marking one thousand full moons. The elder is sometimes passed through a ceremonial wooden window (Jhyā-lankegu), symbolizing rebirth from the womb of the house into a celestial realm.
- Devaratha-rohaṇa: At 88 years, 8 months, and 8 days (becoming a celestial Deva).
- Divyaratha-rohaṇa: At 99 years, 9 months, and 9 days.
- Mahādivyaratha-rohaṇa: At 105 or 110 years, when the elder is revered as fully transcendent, a direct presence of the Divine walking upon the earth.
11. Antyeṣṭi and Kāj-kiriyā: The Final Departure and 13-Day Asceticism (Antyeṣṭi /
When mortal breath grows shallow and the final hour draws near, the family gently lifts the dying person from the wooden bed down onto the bare earth, smeared with fresh cow-dung and spread with sacred green Kuśa grass and black sesame (bhūmīmā sutāune, भूमिमा सुताउने). The metaphysical conviction is ancient: the departing soul must break free in direct physical communion with Mother Earth, not trapped beneath wooden ceilings or artificial furniture. A speck of pure gold, a fresh Tulsī leaf, and drops of holy Ganges water are placed upon the tongue (mukhe-amṛta) to purify the passage of life.
The body is wrapped in a seamless white shroud (or rich red cloth for a married woman whose husband lives) and bound with straw ropes upon a green bamboo bier (kāṭho, काठो). Carried upon the shoulders of sons and kin to Aryaghat at Pashupatinath or the local holy riverbank, the body is bathed in river water and laid upon a funeral pyre of firewood and sandalwood.
The chief mourner (kriyāputra, usually the eldest or youngest son) walks three times counter-clockwise around the pyre carrying a torch of burning reeds, and places the first sacred flame upon the mouth of the deceased (dāg-battī, दागबत्ती). The mouth that nourished and spoke throughout earthly existence is thus surrendered back to Agni, the universal purifier.
Returning home, the sons completely shave their heads, eyebrows, mustache, and beard, leaving only the sacred crown-tuft (tupī). Stripping away all stitched clothes, they don seamless, unstitched white cotton garments (koro / seko, कोरो). For thirteen days, the mourner becomes a strict ascetic:
- Physical Austerity: Sleeping upon the floor on a thin mattress of woven rice-straw (parāl), avoiding leather, mattresses, and footwear, and stepping only upon bare earth.
- Dietary Discipline: Eating only a single meal per day cooked by his own hand over firewood in a brand-new earthenware pot—completely devoid of salt, oil, turmeric, or spices (alino bhojana).
- Daily Piṇḍadāna (Daśagātra): For ten consecutive days, the mourner offers one cooked rice ball (piṇḍa) beside water to rebuild the ten bodily limbs (daśagātra) of the subtle spiritual body (preta-deha) of the departed.
- Sapiṇḍīkaraṇa & Purification: On the eleventh day (Vṛṣotsarga) and twelfth day (Sapiṇḍīkaraṇa), the spirit of the deceased is formally united with the three preceding generations of ancestors (Pitṛ-loka). On the thirteenth day, the family performs Śuddhyāī̃, welcoming relatives and the community for a purified feast.
For one full year, the sons observe Barkhī (बरखी बार्ने): wearing white, abstaining from celebratory festivals (Dashain and Tihar), and eating no festive foods until the annual anniversary rite (puṇyatithi) is concluded, after which vibrant colors and ordinary life resume.
12. Śrāddha: The Perpetual Debt to the Lineage (Śrāddha-Tarpaṇa /
In the worldview of the Himalayas, death does not extinguish the bond between parent and child; it elevates filial gratitude into the sacred annual rite of Śrāddha (derived from śraddhā, श्रद्धा, meaning unwavering faith, love, and devotion). The family lineage remains whole through continuous, debt-cancelling remembrance:
- Ekoddiṣṭa Śrāddha (एकोद्दिष्ट श्राद्ध): Performed on the exact lunar anniversary (tithi) of a parent's passing every single year. The son fasts, wears a sacred finger-ring woven of Kuśa grass (pavitrī), and prepares cooked rice balls (piṇḍa) blended with pure cow's milk, honey, barley, and black sesame (tila). Offering the piṇḍa upon sacred grass, he prays: "Tṛpyatāṃ tṛpyatāṃ idam jalam / piṇḍam..." (May you be fully nourished, satisfied, and at peace).
- Sohra Śrāddha / Pārvana Śrāddha (सोह्र श्राद्ध / पितृपक्ष): During the sixteen days of the dark fortnight of Ashoj (preceding the joy of Dashain), every Hindu householder performs offerings for three generations of paternal and maternal ancestors. Before the household can feast in celebration, the ancestors must first be feasted.
- Feeding the Messengers (Bali-Dāna): Before any human takes food on Śrāddha day, consecrated portions are laid upon broad leaf-plates for the emissaries of the unseen: the crow (kāg-bali, messenger of Yama), the dog (śvāna-bali, guardian of the threshold / saṅghāra), and the cow (go-grāsa, universal mother).
- Gayā-Śrāddha (गया श्राद्ध): The supreme pilgrimage undertaken by sons to holy Gayā in Bihar. By offering a single piṇḍa upon the divine footprint of Lord Viṣṇu (Viṣṇupāda) on the banks of the Phalgu river, the departed soul attains permanent liberation (mokṣa) into Vaikuṇṭha, dissolving all lingering ancestral distress.
