Ashojअसोज

The festivals of Ashoj are on this page. A name at the top jumps to that story. Dashain keeps its own page, and its days stay with it.

The Nava Durgā (नवदुर्गा) dances of Bhaktapur begin at Dashain, and they go on until early summer, around Sithi Nakha in Jestha. The masks are danced through the neighborhoods for that whole stretch of the year, so they do not belong to a single day.

The story

Spanning the sixteen lunar days of the waning fortnight of Ashoj—from the full moon of Bhadra to the autumn new moon of Mahalaya (Sarvapitṛ Amāvāsyā)—Pitr Paksa, popularly known across Nepal as Sohra Shraddha, constitutes the liturgical zenith of ancestral veneration in the Hindu calendar. According to classical Puranic cosmology, the realm of ancestors (Pitṛloka) lies proximate to the solar sphere; during this sacred interlude, the gates of King Yama's subterranean halls swing open, permitting departed forebears through three generational lineages (father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and their consorts) to hover near the thresholds of their mortal descendants in anticipation of filial sustenance.

Each household performs the elaborate Pārvana Shraddha on the exact lunar tithi on which the ancestor departed. Cleansing the body and donning a ring of sacred kuśa grass (pavitrī) on the ring finger, the householder recites ancient Vedic mantras, offering black sesame seeds (kāla tila), barley, and mountain river water from cupped hands in continuous streams of tarpaṇa. Kneading cooked rice, barley flour, cow's milk, honey, and clarified butter into rounded ritual balls known as piṇḍa, the performer presents them upon sacred leaf-plates to nourish the ethereal bodies of the ancestors. Before family members partake of the solemn memorial meal, portions are placed outdoors to feed crows (the traditional avian messengers of Yama), cows, and stray dogs, concluding on Mahalaya Amavasya when a universal offering liberates all forgotten, childless, or wandering spirits, thereby purifying the domestic hearth before Goddess Durga arrives at Ghatasthapana the following dawn.

The story

Celebrated with profound solemnity across the Maithil, Bhojpuri, and Tharu plains of the southern Tarai on the eighth day of the waning moon of Ashoj (Aśvina Krishna Ashtami), Jitiya stands as one of the most physically rigorous maternal vows across South Asia. Lasting approximately thirty-six consecutive hours without a single drop of water (nirjalā), the fast is undertaken by devoted mothers solely for the protection, longevity, and heroic flourishing of their offspring. The liturgical heart of the vow centers upon King Jīmūtavāhana, a legendary Vidyādhara prince celebrated in the Kathāsaritsāgara and Bhaviṣya Purāṇa for supreme self-abnegation and boundless compassion toward vulnerable beings.

According to legend, King Jīmūtavāhana renounced his kingdom to dwell in hermitage, where he encountered a distraught Nāga mother weeping because her only son, Śaṅkhacūḍa, was destined to be devoured by the celestial raptor Garuḍa under an ancient truce. Moved to the depths of his being, the prince wrapped himself in Śaṅkhacūḍa's red execution shroud and surrendered his own living flesh upon the sacrificial boulder; astonished by the mortal prince's joyous magnanimity in suffering for another's child, Garuḍa renounced his predatory covenant, revived the prince, and granted a divine boon that any mother who fasts in honor of Jīmūtavāhana shall never experience the untimely death of her children. Across the villages, mothers assemble in courtyards around clay-modeled shrines of an eagle (Chilhorī) and a jackal (Siyāranī), recounting folk parables of disciplined devotion, singing ancient Bhojpuri ballads, and breaking their fast with nutrient-rich steamed finger-millet bread (maruwā) and noni greens.
