Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) continues: seeing, speaking, hearing, and still not knowing. Meter: upajāti (उपजाति). The second quarter has twelve syllables, jagatī (जगती): āścaryavad vadati tathaiva cānyaḥ (आश्चर्यवद्वदति तथैव चान्यः). The written half joins the m (म्) of enam (एनम्) to that ā (आ). The other three quarters have eleven, triṣṭubh (त्रिष्टुभ्).

The verse

Someone sees this one as a wonder, another speaks of him just so as a wonder, and another hears of him as a wonder; and even having heard, no one knows him.

Where it sits

Sight of this one is rare at seeing, at saying, and at hearing, and hearing is not yet knowing. The words that sounded like wisdom in 2.11 can be said while the one they are about stays unknown, and the stretch is about to close.

The phrases

आश्चर्यवत् पश्यति कश्चित् एनम् āścaryavat paśyati kaścit enam is the one who sees. Someone sees this one as a wonder. कश्चित् + एनम् kaścit + enam is kaścid enam (कश्चिदेनम्), because t (त्) before a vowel becomes d (द्).

āścaryavat vadati tathā eva ca anyaḥ (आश्चर्यवत् वदति तथा एव च अन्यः) is the one who speaks. And another speaks of him just so, as a wonder. आश्चर्यवत् + वदति āścaryavat + vadati is āścaryavad vadati (आश्चर्यवद्वदति). तथा + एव tathā + eva is tathaiva (तथैव). च + अन्यः ca + anyaḥ is cānyaḥ (चान्यः). एनम् + आश्चर्यवत् enam + āścaryavat across the two quarters is recited in one run, enam āścaryavat (एनमाश्चर्यवत्).

आश्चर्यवत् च एनम् अन्यः शृणोति āścaryavat ca enam anyaḥ śṛṇoti is the one who hears. And another hears of this one as a wonder. आश्चर्यवत् + च āścaryavat + ca is āścaryavac ca (आश्चर्यवच्च). च + एनम् ca + enam is cainam (चैनम्).

śrutvā api enam veda na ca eva kaścit (श्रुत्वा अपि एनम् वेद न च एव कश्चित्) is the turn. And even having heard, no one knows this one. श्रुत्वा + अपि śrutvā + api is śrutvāpi (श्रुत्वापि). अपि + एनम् api + enam is apy enam (अप्येनम्). न + च + एव na + ca + eva is na caiva (न चैव).

Sanskrit in this line

आश्चर्यवत् + च āścaryavat + ca is recited āścaryavac ca (आश्चर्यवच्च). त् + च t + c becomes च्च cc. The t (त्) of --vat (वत्) disappears into the double c (च्). The same --vat (वत्) meets v (व्) in āścaryavad vadati (आश्चर्यवद्वदति), where त् + व् t + v becomes dv (द्व्), and meets a vowel in kaścid enam (कश्चिदेनम्), where t (त्) becomes d (द्). Three meetings, one suffix. kaścit (कश्चित्) at the start is "someone." kaścit (कश्चित्) at the end, with na (न), is "no one."

Say it back

The three who meet this one as a wonder, and that even the one who has heard may not know.
