2.35

भयाद्रणादुपरतं मंस्यन्ते त्वां महारथाः ।
येषां च त्वं बहुमतो भूत्वा यास्यसि लाघवम् ॥

bhayād raṇād uparataṃ maṃsyante tvāṃ mahārathāḥ
yeṣāṃ ca tvaṃ bahumato bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) continues, and the disgrace takes its content from what the great warriors will think.

The verse

The great warriors will think you withdrew from the battle out of fear, and you, having been much regarded by them, will come to be taken lightly.

नेपालीमा

ठूला रथीहरूले सोच्नेछन् कि तिमी डरले युद्धबाट हटेका हौ। तिनीहरूले धेरै मानेका तिमी हलुका गनिनेछौ।

Where it sits

The story the mahāratha (महारथ) warriors will tell is a story of fear, and regard will turn to lightness. That is the disgrace 2.34 said would outlast death.

The phrases

भयात् रणात् उपरतम् मंस्यन्ते त्वाम् महारथाः bhayāt raṇāt uparatam maṃsyante tvām mahārathāḥ is their thought. The great warriors will think you withdrawn from the battle out of fear. भयात् + रणात् bhayāt + raṇāt is bhayād raṇāt (भयाद् रणात्). रणात् + उपरतम् raṇāt + uparatam is raṇād uparatam (रणादुपरतम्). Two ablatives, both saying from what he turned back. uparatam (उपरतम्) agrees with tvām (त्वाम्).

yeṣām ca tvam bahumataḥ bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam (येषाम् च त्वम् बहुमतः भूत्वा यास्यसि लाघवम्) is the fall. And you, having been much regarded by them, will go to lightness. bahumataḥ (बहुमतः) before bhūtvā (भूत्वा) is bahumato (बहुमतो). yeṣām (येषाम्) points back to mahārathāḥ (महारथाः).

Sanskrit in this line

bhayāt (भयात्) and raṇāt (रणात्) are both ablative, and both answer "from." Fear is the cause he is supposed to have acted from. The battle is the place he is supposed to have left. uparatam (उपरतम्) is the accusative description of tvām (त्वाम्): they will think you, the withdrawn one. lāghavam (लाघवम्) is the accusative of yāsyasi (यास्यसि), the lightness he will go to. "Go" here takes the state he arrives at, not a town.

Say it back

What the great warriors will think, and the lightness he will go to. Both ablatives.
