5.5

यत्साङ्ख्यैः प्राप्यते स्थानं तद्योगैरपि गम्यते ।
एकं साङ्ख्यं च योगं च यः पश्यति स पश्यति ॥

yat sāṅkhyaiḥ prāpyate sthānaṃ tad yogair api gamyate
ekaṃ sāṅkhyaṃ ca yogaṃ ca yaḥ paśyati sa paśyati

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) continues. The fruit of 5.4 is now called a place, and both companies arrive there.

The verse

The place reached by the men of sāṅkhya is also reached by the men of yoga, and the one who sees sāṅkhya and yoga as one is the one who sees.

Where it sits

5.4 said the fruit of both comes to the man settled in one. This verse names the arrival as one place, and it names the seeing that matches that place: the two are one thing looked at from two sides.

The phrases

yat sāṅkhyaiḥ prāpyate sthānam (यत् साङ्ख्यैः प्राप्यते स्थानम्) is "the place which is reached by the men of sāṅkhya." tat yogaiḥ api gamyate (तत् योगैः अपि गम्यते) brings the other company to that same place. Two passives, one place.

ekam sāṅkhyam ca yogam ca (एकम् साङ्ख्यम् च योगम् च) is the object of the first paśyati (पश्यति). He sees the two as one. saḥ paśyati (सः पश्यति) is the second verb, and it has no object written. The seeing that has an object is the ordinary one. The seeing with no object is the one the verse is willing to call seeing.

yogaiḥ api (योगैः अपि) is recited yogair api (योगैरपि). saḥ paśyati (सः पश्यति) is recited sa paśyati (स पश्यति), the same loss of visarga as in 5.3.

Sanskrit in this line

prāpyate (प्राप्यते) and gamyate (गम्यते) are passive. The place is the subject, in the nominative: sthānam (स्थानम्). The people who reach it are in the instrumental: sāṅkhyaiḥ (साङ्ख्यैः), yogaiḥ (योगैः). The ending --aiḥ (ऐः) on an a (अ)-stem plural answers "by." The verse can say the place is reached without making either company the hero of the sentence.

Say it back

Name the one place, then the man who sees the two as one. If the second paśyati (पश्यति) grows an object the verse did not give it, stay here.
