The verse

For the sage who wishes to climb to yoga, action is said to be the means; for that same man once he has climbed onto yoga, quiet is said to be the means.

नेपालीमा

योगमा चढ्न चाहने मुनिका लागि कर्मलाई साधन भनिन्छ। त्यही मानिस योगमा चढिसकेपछि शान्तलाई साधन भनिन्छ।

Where it sits

Action was not cancelled in 6.1. Here it is given a season. It is the means while he is climbing. It is not the means after he has climbed.

The phrases

ārurukṣoḥ muneḥ (आरुरुक्षोः मुनेः) is the person still on the way up. For him, कर्म कारणम् उच्यते karma kāraṇam ucyate: action is said to be the means.

yogārūḍhasya tasya eva (योगारूढस्य तस्य एव) is that same man once he has climbed. For him the means has changed. शमः कारणम् उच्यते śamaḥ kāraṇam ucyate: quiet is said to be the means.

tasya eva (तस्य एव) is recited tasyaiva (तस्यैव). The genitives ārurukṣoḥ (आरुरुक्षोः) and muneḥ (मुनेः) are recited with r (र्) before the next word: ārurukṣor muner yogam (आरुरुक्षोर्मुनेर्योगम्).

Sanskrit in this line

ārurukṣu (आरुरुक्षु) and ārūḍha (आरूढ) are two forms of one verb, ā-ruh (आ-रुह्), "to climb." The desiderative says he wants to. The past participle says he has. The genitive --oḥ (ओः) is the u (उ)-stem ending, "of." Both men are genitive because the verse is about the means that belongs to each.

Say it back

Two men, two means. If śamaḥ (शमः) is said of the one still climbing, stay here.
