यथाकाशस्थितो नित्यं
वायुः सर्वत्रगो महान् ।
तथा सर्वाणि भूतानि
मत्स्थानीत्युपधारय ॥

yathākāśasthito nityaṃ vāyuḥ sarvatrago mahān
tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni matsthānīty upadhāraya

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is still speaking to Arjuna (अर्जुन). upadhāraya (उपधारय) is the command.

The verse

As the great wind, going everywhere, always stands in the sky, so hold that all beings stand in me.

नेपालीमा

जसरी सबैतिर जाने ठूलो हावा सधैँ आकाशमा रहन्छ, त्यसरी नै सबै भूतहरू ममा रहन्छन् भनी मान।

Where it sits

This is the image for 9.4 and 9.5 together. Beings rest in him as wind rests in the sky. He is not in them as a thing sits in a place, and the world does not exhaust him.

Split: यथा + आकाश-स्थितः + नित्यम् + वायुः + सर्वत्र-गः + महान् + तथा + सर्वाणि + भूतानि + मत्-स्थानि + इति + उपधारय

The phrases

yathā ākāśa-sthitaḥ nityaṃ vāyuḥ (यथा आकाश-स्थितः नित्यं वायुः) is the picture. The great wind is always standing in the sky. sarvatra-gaḥ mahān (सर्वत्र-गः महान्) says the wind goes everywhere and is great. The sky is not a box the wind uses up.

tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni mat-sthāni (तथा सर्वाणि भूतानि मत्-स्थानि) is the same picture with the beings in his place and the sky's place given to him. iti (इति) marks the end of what is to be held.

upadhāraya (उपधारय) is the order. Take it this way. The wind is in the sky. The beings are in him. The sky is not sitting inside the wind.

Sanskrit in this line

ākāśa-sthitaḥ (आकाश-स्थितः) before nityam (नित्यम्) is recited sthito (स्थितो). aḥ (अः) before a voiced consonant becomes o (ओ). The same change hits sarvatra-gaḥ (सर्वत्र-गः) before mahān (महान्): sarvatrago mahān (सर्वत्रगो महान्). यथा + आकाश yathā + ākāśa is yathākāśa (यथाकाश), आ + आ ā + ā staying ā (आ).

Say it back

Cover the English. Say the wind, then the beings. If the beings are put in the wind and he is put in the sky as a thing inside them, stay here.
