9.18

गतिर्भर्ता प्रभुः साक्षी

प्रभवः प्रलयः स्थानं
निधानं बीजमव्ययम् ॥

gatir bhartā prabhuḥ sākṣī nivāsaḥ śaraṇaṃ suhṛt
prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ sthānaṃ nidhānaṃ bījam avyayam

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is still speaking to Arjuna (अर्जुन). The list of "I am" still has no new finite verb.

The verse

I am the goal, the bearer, the lord, the witness, the dwelling, the refuge, the friend, the origin, the dissolution, the place, the store, the imperishable seed.

नेपालीमा

म लक्ष्य, धान्ने, प्रभु, साक्षी, बास, आश्रय, मित्र, उत्पत्ति, लय, ठाउँ, भण्डार र अविनाशी बीज हुँ।

Where it sits

The "I am" of 9.16 and 9.17 finishes its sweep. Everything a person walks toward, hides in, or watches a world begin and end by, he names as himself. 9.19 will put verbs back under that claim: heat, rain, death, and what is.

Split: गतिः + भर्ता + प्रभुः + साक्षी + निवासः + शरणम् + सुहृत् + प्रभवः + प्रलयः + स्थानम् + निधानम् + बीजम् + अव्ययम्

gatiḥ + bhartā + prabhuḥ + sākṣī + nivāsaḥ + śaraṇam + suhṛt + prabhavaḥ + pralayaḥ + sthānam + nidhānam + bījam + avyayam

The phrases

gatiḥ bhartā prabhuḥ sākṣī (गतिः भर्ता प्रभुः साक्षी) is goal, bearer, lord, witness. nivāsaḥ śaraṇam suhṛt (निवासः शरणम् सुहृत्) is where one lives, where one flees, and the friend.

prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ (प्रभवः प्रलयः) are the two ends of a world: the arising and the dissolving. स्थानं निधानं बीजम् अव्ययम् sthānaṃ nidhānaṃ bījam avyayam is the place, the store, and the seed that does not decay.

Sanskrit in this line

suhṛt (सुहृत्) is the nominative of a stem that ends in a consonant, suhṛd (सुहृद्). It does not grow a visarga. गतिः + भर्ता gatiḥ + bhartā is recited gatir bhartā (गतिर्भर्ता): iḥ (इः) before a voiced consonant becomes ir (इर्).

Say it back

Cover the English. Say the origin and the dissolution as a pair. If pralayaḥ (प्रलयः) drops, stay here.
