10.14

Arjuna continues. Acceptance, then the limit he has understood.

The verse

I hold all this to be true, which you say to me, Keśava; indeed, blessed one, neither the gods nor the dānavas know your manifestation.

नेपालीमा

हे केशव, तपाईंले मलाई भन्नुभएको यो सबै म सत्य मान्छु। हे भगवन्, तपाईंको प्रकटीकरण देवताले पनि दानवले पनि जान्दैनन्।

Where it sits

The acceptance is explicit. manye (मन्ये) is Arjuna's own verb, not a quotation of the sages. Then he states the limit those others share. The next verse will say who does know.

The phrases

सर्वम् एतत् ऋतं मन्ये यत् मां वदसि sarvam etat ṛtaṃ manye yat māṃ vadasi is the acceptance in his own verb. I hold all this to be true, this which you say to me. सर्वम् एतत् sarvam etat is the correlative. yat (यत्) is the relative.

na hi te bhagavan vyaktiṃ viduḥ devāḥ na dānavāḥ (न हि ते भगवन् व्यक्तिं विदुः देवाः न दानवाः) repeats 10.2 from Arjuna's side, and adds the dānavāḥ (दानवाः). They do not know your manifestation. The gods do not, and the dānavas do not.

Sanskrit in this line

etat (एतत्) + ṛtam (ऋतम्) is recited etad ṛtam (एतदृतम्). A final t (त्) before a vowel is voiced to d (द्). The same change gives tat (तत्) + aham (अहम्), later, as tad aham (तदहम्). yat (यत्) + mām (माम्) is yan mām (यन्माम्). t (त्) before m (म्) becomes the anusvāra.

viduḥ (विदुः) + devāḥ (देवाः) is vidur devāḥ (विदुर्देवाः). Visarga after u (उ) before voiced d (द्) becomes r (र्).

Say it back

What he holds true, then who does not know. If manye (मन्ये) is replaced by āhuḥ (आहुः), stay here. This verse is his own assent.
