11.5

श्रीभगवानुवाच
पश्य मे पार्थ रूपाणि शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
नानाविधानि दिव्यानि नानावर्णाकृतीनि च ॥

śrībhagavān uvāca
paśya me pārtha rūpāṇi śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ
nānāvidhāni divyāni nānāvarṇākṛtīni ca

śrībhagavān (श्रीभगवान्) is speaking. The n (न्) of bhagavān (भगवान्) joins uvāca (उवाच), so the line is recited śrībhagavānuvāca (श्रीभगवानुवाच). It stands outside the meter. The speaker is Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण).

The verse

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) said: See my forms, son of Pṛthā (पृथा), by hundreds and by thousands, of many kinds, divine, and of many colors and shapes.

नेपालीमा

कृष्णले भन्नुभयो, हे पृथापुत्र, मेरा सयौँ र हजारौँ रूप हेर, जो अनेक प्रकारका, दिव्य, र अनेक रङ तथा आकृतिका छन्।

Where it sits

The request is granted in the imperative, and the singular form Arjuna (अर्जुन) asked for opens into a plural. The next verse will name the beings inside those forms.

Split: पश्य + मे + पार्थ + रूपाणि + शतशः + अथ + सहस्रशः + नाना-विधानि + दिव्यानि + नाना-वर्ण-आकृतीनि + च

paśya + me + pārtha + rūpāṇi + śataśaḥ + atha + sahasraśaḥ + nānā-vidhāni + divyāni + nānā-varṇa-ākṛtīni + ca

The phrases

paśya me pārtha rūpāṇi (पश्य मे पार्थ रूपाणि) answers the causative with a plain imperative. See my forms. The plural rūpāṇi (रूपाणि) is already more than the one form he named.

śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ (शतशः अथ सहस्रशः) is the count. By hundreds, and by thousands. The --śas (शस्) ending is the same one that made vistaraśaḥ (विस्तरशः) in 11.2.

nānā-vidhāni divyāni nānā-varṇa-ākṛtīni ca (नाना-विधानि दिव्यानि नाना-वर्ण-आकृतीनि च) describes them. Many kinds, divine, and of many colors and shapes.

Sanskrit in this line

शतशः + अथ śataśaḥ + atha is recited śataśo 'tha (शतशोऽथ). The same avagraha as moho 'yam (मोहोऽयम्) in 11.1. aḥ (अः) plus a (अ) is o (ओ), and the lost a (अ) is written ऽ.

Say it back

The verb he is given, and the number of forms. If rūpāṇi (रूपाणि) comes out singular, the answer has been shrunk back to the request.
