dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṃ pravyathitāntarātmā
dhṛtiṃ na vindāmi śamaṃ ca viṣṇo

Arjuna (अर्जुन) is still speaking, to Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण). Meter: triṣṭubh (त्रिष्टुभ्). Four quarters, eleven syllables each, forty-four in the verse.

The verse

Having seen you touching the sky, blazing, many-colored, mouth stretched open, eyes wide and blazing, my inner self is shaken and I find no steadiness and no calm, O Viṣṇu (विष्णु).

Where it sits

The worlds were shaken. Now the man cannot find dhṛtim (धृतिम्) or śamam (शमम्) in himself. The next verse will say he does not know the directions, and will ask for grace.

The phrases

नभः-स्पृशम् दीप्तम् अनेक-वर्णम् nabhaḥ-spṛśam dīptam aneka-varṇam is the size and the color. Touching the sky, blazing, many-colored.

vyātta-ānanam dīpta-viśāla-netram dṛṣṭvā hi tvām (व्यात्त-आननम् दीप्त-विशाल-नेत्रम् दृष्ट्वा हि त्वाम्) is the face that undoes him. Mouth wide open, eyes wide and blazing. Having seen you so.

pravyathita-antara-ātmā dhṛtim na vindāmi śamam ca (प्रव्यथित-अन्तर-आत्मा धृतिम् न विन्दामि शमम् च) is the loss. Inner self shaken, I find neither steadiness nor calm.

Sanskrit in this line

nabhaḥ-spṛśam (नभः-स्पृशम्) keeps the visarga inside the compound. nabhas (नभस्) before s (स्) of spṛś (स्पृश्) does not become o (ओ). Before a sibilant, visarga stays ḥ (ः). pravyathita-antara-ātmā (प्रव्यथित-अन्तर-आत्मा) is one nominative, a bahuvrīhi: the last member आत्मन ātman names the part, and the man is the whole.

Say it back

The two things he cannot find. If he finds śamam (शमम्), the na (न) was moved off it. The na (न) covers both.
