11.25

दंष्ट्राकरालानि च ते मुखानि
दृष्ट्वैव कालानलसन्निभानि ।
दिशो न जाने न लभे च शर्म
प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास ॥

daṃṣṭrākarālāni ca te mukhāni
dṛṣṭvaiva kālānalasannibhāni
diśo na jāne na labhe ca śarma
prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa

Arjuna (अर्जुन) is still speaking, to Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण). Meter: triṣṭubh (त्रिष्टुभ्). Four quarters, eleven syllables each, forty-four in the verse.

The verse

Just having seen your mouths, terrible with fangs and like the fire of time, I do not know the directions and I find no shelter; be gracious, lord of gods, abode of the world.

Where it sits

dhṛtim (धृतिम्) and śamam (शमम्) failed in 11.24. Now the directions fail. He asks grace before he says who is rushing into those mouths. The name kāla (काल), time, is here only as the fire the mouths resemble. Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) will take the name for himself at 11.32.

The phrases

daṃṣṭrā-karālāni ca te mukhāni dṛṣṭvā eva kāla-anala-sannibhāni (दंष्ट्रा-करालानि च ते मुखानि दृष्ट्वा एव काल-अनल-सन्निभानि) is the sight that does it. Just having seen your mouths, dreadful with fangs, like the fire of time.

diśaḥ na jāne na labhe ca śarma (दिशः न जाने न लभे च शर्म) is the loss of place. I do not know the directions, and I find no shelter.

prasīda deva-īśa jagat-nivāsa (प्रसीद देव-ईश जगत्-निवास) is the plea. Be gracious, lord of gods, abode of the world. The same vocative will return when he asks for the gentle form.

Sanskrit in this line

दृष्ट्वा + एव dṛṣṭvā + eva is dṛṣṭvaiva (दृष्ट्वैव). ā (आ) plus e (ए) is ai (ऐ). दिशः + न diśaḥ + na is diśo na (दिशो न): aḥ (अः) before n (न्) becomes o (ओ). जगत् + निवास jagat + nivāsa is jagannivāsa (जगन्निवास): t (त्) before n (न्) becomes n (न्), and the n (न्) is doubled in the joining.

Say it back

What the mouths are like, and what he cannot find. If śarma (शर्म) comes out as "fame," the shelter was missed. He is asking for a place to stand.
