दैवी सम्पद्विमोक्षाय निबन्धायासुरी मता ।
मा शुचः सम्पदं दैवीमभिजातोऽसि पाण्डव ॥

daivī sampad vimokṣāya nibandhāyāsurī matā
mā śucaḥ sampadaṃ daivīm abhijāto 'si pāṇḍava

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) turns from the two lists to the man who is hearing them.

The verse

The divine endowment is held to be for release and the demonic for bondage, so do not grieve, Pāṇḍava (पाण्डव): you are born to the divine endowment.

नेपालीमा

दैवी सम्पद् मोक्षका लागि र आसुरी बन्धनका लागि मानिन्छ, त्यसैले शोक नगर, हे पाण्डव, तिमी दैवी सम्पद्तर्फ जन्मेको हौ।

Where it sits

The lists were general, and this verse puts Arjuna on the divine side of them. The divine endowment is for release, the demonic for bondage, and he is told not to grieve.

The phrases

daivī sampat vimokṣāya nibandhāya āsurī matā (दैवी सम्पत् विमोक्षाय निबन्धाय आसुरी मता) sorts the two endowments by what each is for. The divine one is for release. The demonic one is for bondage. matā (मता) is "held to be," and it covers both clauses.

मा शुचः सम्पदम् दैवीम् अभिजातः असि पाण्डव mā śucaḥ sampadam daivīm abhijātaḥ asi pāṇḍava is the word to Arjuna. Do not grieve. The reason is the second clause: you are born to the divine endowment. The genitive abhijātasya (अभिजातस्य) of 16.3 and 16.4 has become a nominative pointed at him.

Sanskrit in this line

mā śucaḥ (मा शुचः) is a prohibition, and śucaḥ (शुचः) is injunctive: an aorist shape with the past-time a- (अ-) left off. Second person singular, "you grieve." With mā (मा) it means "do not grieve." Do not read śucaḥ (शुचः) as a noun, "of grief," and do not put the augment back.

Say it back

Cover the English. Say which endowment is for release and which is for bondage, then the prohibition. If vimokṣāya (विमोक्षाय) and nibandhāya (निबन्धाय) change places, stay here.
