16.11

चिन्तामपरिमेयां च प्रलयान्तामुपाश्रिताः ।
कामोपभोगपरमा एतावदिति निश्चिताः ॥

cintām aparimeyāṃ ca pralayāntām upāśritāḥ
kāmopabhogaparamā etāvad iti niścitāḥ

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) says what they have given themselves over to, and what they have decided.

The verse

They give themselves to immeasurable care that ends only at the dissolution, holding enjoyment of desire as the highest, resolved that this much is all.

Where it sits

The insatiable desire of 16.10 now has a horizon: the care runs until the dissolution, and the decision is that enjoyment is the whole of what there is. The next verse is how that decision makes them strive.

Split: चिन्ताम् + अपरिमेयाम् + च + प्रलय-अन्ताम् + उपाश्रिताः + काम-उपभोग-परमाः + एतावत् + इति + निश्चिताः

The phrases

चिन्ताम् अपरिमेयाम् च प्रलय-अन्ताम् उपाश्रिताः cintām aparimeyām ca pralaya-antām upāśritāḥ is the care. They have resorted to a worry that cannot be measured and that ends only when the world ends. Both adjectives agree with cintām (चिन्ताम्).

काम-उपभोग-परमाः एतावत् इति निश्चिताः kāma-upabhoga-paramāḥ etāvat iti niścitāḥ is the decision. Enjoyment of desire is the highest thing they recognize, and iti (इति) closes the thought etāvat (एतावत्): "this much is all."

Sanskrit in this line

एतावत् + इति etāvat + iti is recited etāvad iti (एतावदिति). t (त्) before a vowel becomes d (द्). iti (इति) is the quotation mark on etāvat (एतावत्). Leave it off, and "this much" becomes the narrator's measure instead of the decision they have made.

Say it back

Cover the English. Say what they hold as highest, and the two words inside iti (इति). If etāvat (एतावत्) is left outside the quotation, stay here.
