16.15

आढ्योऽभिजनवानस्मि कोऽन्योऽस्ति सदृशो मया ।
यक्ष्ये दास्यामि मोदिष्य इत्यज्ञानविमोहिताः ॥

āḍhyo 'bhijanavān asmi ko 'nyo 'sti sadṛśo mayā
yakṣye dāsyāmi modiṣya ity ajñānavimohitāḥ

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) closes their speech with iti (इति), and the last word is his.

The verse

Rich and high-born, with no one equal to them, they will sacrifice, give, and rejoice, and thus they are deluded by ignorance.

Where it sits

The quotation that began with "this has been gained by me" ends at iti (इति), and Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) calls the whole speech delusion by ignorance. ajñānam (अज्ञानम्) was already on the demonic list in 16.4.

Split: आढ्यः + अभिजनवान् + अस्मि + कः + अन्यः + अस्ति + सदृशः + मया + यक्ष्ये + दास्यामि + मोदिष्ये + इति + अज्ञान-विमोहिताः

The phrases

आढ्यः अभिजनवान् अस्मि कः अन्यः अस्ति सदृशः मया āḍhyaḥ abhijanavān asmi kaḥ anyaḥ asti sadṛśaḥ mayā is the rank they give themselves. I am rich and high-born. Who else is there equal to me? mayā (मया) is the person they measure others against.

yakṣye dāsyāmi modiṣye iti ajñāna-vimohitāḥ (यक्ष्ये दास्यामि मोदिष्ये इति अज्ञान-विमोहिताः) is the last boast and the close. I shall sacrifice, I shall give, I shall rejoice. iti (इति) ends what they say. ajñāna-vimohitāḥ (अज्ञान-विमोहिताः) is not part of the boast. It names the people who have been speaking since 16.13.

Sanskrit in this line

मोदिष्ये + इति modiṣye + iti is recited modiṣya iti (मोदिष्य इति). e (ए) before a vowel other than a (अ) becomes short a (अ), and the following vowel stays: ए + इ e + i becomes अ + इ a + i, with a gap. There is no avagraha, because the vowel that followed was i (इ), not a (अ). The e (ए) of modiṣye (मोदिष्ये) is the ending that says "I shall." Lose it and the last verb of the boast has no person.

Say it back

Cover the English. Say the three futures, then stop at iti (इति). If ajñāna-vimohitāḥ (अज्ञान-विमोहिताः) is put inside the quotation, the boast has swallowed the judgment.
