The verse

Foods that increase life, clarity, strength, health, ease, and satisfaction, savory, oily, firm, and pleasing to the heart, are dear to people of सत्त्व.

Where it sits

17.7 promised three foods. This is the first. The mark is what the food grows, and the pleasure it gives the heart. The driving strand is next, and its food will give pain.

The phrases

āyuḥsattvabalārogyasukhaprītivivardhanāḥ (आयुःसत्त्वबलारोग्यसुखप्रीतिविवर्धनाः) is one adjective with six things the food grows. Life, the clear being, strength, health, ease, satisfaction. The plural ending sits on vivardhanāḥ (विवर्धनाः) and agrees with the foods.

rasyāḥ snigdhāḥ sthirāḥ hṛdyāḥ (रस्याः स्निग्धाः स्थिराः हृद्याः) is how the food is in the mouth and after. Savory, oily, firm, pleasing to the heart. Four more nominatives on āhārāḥ (आहाराः).

āhārāḥ sāttvikapriyāḥ (आहाराः सात्त्विकप्रियाः) is the classification. These foods are dear to the clear strand. The compound ends on priyāḥ (प्रियाः), "dear."

Sanskrit in this line

स्थिराः + हृद्याः + आहाराः sthirāḥ + hṛdyāḥ + āhārāḥ is recited sthirā hṛdyā āhārāḥ (स्थिरा हृद्या आहाराः). āḥ (आः) before a voiced consonant drops its visarga and leaves ā (आ), so sthirāḥ hṛdyāḥ (स्थिराः हृद्याः) is sthirā hṛdyāḥ (स्थिरा हृद्याः). āḥ (आः) before a vowel drops the same way and the vowels stay in hiatus: hṛdyāḥ āhārāḥ (हृद्याः आहाराः) is hṛdyā āhārāḥ (हृद्या आहाराः). Both plurals are still on the foods.

Say it back

What the food grows, then sāttvikapriyāḥ (सात्त्विकप्रियाः). If these foods are called dear to rajas (रजस्), stay here.
