17.16

मनः प्रसादः सौम्यत्वं मौनमात्मविनिग्रहः ।
भावसंशुद्धिरित्येतत्तपो मानसमुच्यते ॥

manaḥ prasādaḥ saumyatvaṃ maunam ātmavinigrahaḥ
bhāvasaṃśuddhir ity etat tapo mānasam ucyate

śrībhagavān (श्रीभगवान्) is still speaking. This is the austerity of the mind.

The verse

Clarity of mind, gentleness, silence, holding the self in, and purity of one's state: this is called the austerity of the mind.

नेपालीमा

मनको स्पष्टता, सौम्यता, मौन, आत्मालाई भित्र समात्नु र आफ्नो भावको शुद्धता, यसलाई मनको तप भनिन्छ।

Where it sits

Body, speech, and mind are now named. 17.17 will take the three together and class them under the strands. The seats are not the strands. A fierce mind and a gentle mind can both be called mental austerity. The strand is a further question.

Split: मनः-प्रसादः + सौम्यत्वम् + मौनम् + आत्म-विनिग्रहः + भाव-संशुद्धिः + इति + एतत् + तपः + मानसम् + उच्यते

manaḥ-prasādaḥ + saumyatvam + maunam + ātma-vinigrahaḥ + bhāva-saṃśuddhiḥ + iti + etat + tapaḥ + mānasam + ucyate

The phrases

मनःप्रसादः सौम्यत्वम् मौनम् आत्मविनिग्रहः भावसंशुद्धिः manaḥprasādaḥ saumyatvam maunam ātmavinigrahaḥ bhāvasaṃśuddhiḥ is the list. Clarity of mind, gentleness, silence, holding the self in, purity of one's state. Five nominatives. Silence is in the mind's list. Speech already had its verse.

इति एतत् तपः मानसम् उच्यते iti etat tapaḥ mānasam ucyate closes it the way the body and the speech were closed. Thus this is called austerity of the mind. etat (एतत्) gathers the list into one neuter.

Sanskrit in this line

संशुद्धिः + इति + एतत् + तपः saṃśuddhiḥ + iti + etat + tapaḥ is recited saṃśuddhir ity etat tapaḥ (संशुद्धिरित्येतत्तपः). iḥ (इः) before i (इ) becomes ir (इर्): saṃśuddhir iti (संशुद्धिरिति). Then इ + ए i + e becomes ye (ये): ity etat (इत्येतत्). The t (त्) of etat (एतत्) meets the t (त्) of tapaḥ (तपः) and is written double, etat tapaḥ (एतत्तपः). Three joins, and the list-closer iti (इति) is in the middle of them.

Say it back

The five of the mind, closed by mānasam (मानसम्). If maunam (मौनम्) is moved onto the speech of 17.15, stay here.
