1.1.11
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.11
वृद्धिश् च कर्तृभूम्नास्य
vṛddhiś ca kartṛbhūmnāsya
The line
And there is increase of it through the abundance of speakers.
नेपालीमा
र वक्ता धेरै भए त्यसको वृद्धि हुन्छ।
Where it sits
Asya is śabda (शब्द), still the subject of the objection. This is the last reason in the objector's list. The increase will be assigned to noise, not to the word.
Split: vṛddhiḥ (वृद्धिः) + ca (च) + kartṛ-bhūmnā (कर्तृ-भूम्ना) + asya (अस्य)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| vṛddhiḥ (वृद्धिः) | nominative singular, feminine | increase |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
| kartṛ-bhūmnā (कर्तृ-भूम्ना) | instrumental singular, neuter | by the abundance of makers, by many speakers |
| asya (अस्य) | genitive singular, masculine | of this word |
The phrases
Many people pronouncing together are heard as one large sound. One speaker is quieter.
The objector says each maker produces a part, and the heap of parts is the large sound. A thing that grows with the number of makers is, on his view, produced. Asya is the word under debate.
Sanskrit in this line
Kartṛbhūmnāsya (कर्तृभूम्नास्य) is kartṛ-bhūmnā (कर्तृ-भूम्ना) plus asya. Bhūmnā (भूम्ना) is the instrumental of bhūman (भूमन्), abundance. The long ā (आ) is that sandhi.
Say it back
Gloss the increase that comes with many speakers. It closes the objector's list.
