1.1.15
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.15
आदित्यवद् यौगपद्यम्
ādityavad yaugapadyam
The line
Simultaneity is like that of the sun.
नेपालीमा
एकसाथ हुनु सूर्यको जस्तै हो।
Where it sits
Yaugapadya is the simultaneity the objector urged in 1.1.9. The one word is still the subject.
Split: āditya-vat (आदित्य-वत्) + yaugapadyam (यौगपद्यम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| āditya-vat (आदित्य-वत्) | indeclinable | like the sun |
| yaugapadyam (यौगपद्यम्) | nominative singular, neuter | simultaneity |
The phrases
The sun is one. A man facing east sees it in front of him in the morning. A man standing to his south does not see two suns. Distance keeps people from fixing the place, and they talk as if it stood in many places.
The word is like that. Hearers in different places can have the one word at once. The hearing does not require a fresh word made for each place.
Sanskrit in this line
Ādityavat (आदित्यवत्) is āditya (आदित्य) plus the suffix vat, like the sun. The pāṭha (पाठ) writes ādittyavadyaugapadyam (आदित्त्यवद्यौगपद्यम्), with a doubled t and no break. The line taught here is ādityavad (आदित्यवद्) yaugapadyam.
Say it back
Remember the sun: one thing, taken by many at once.
