1.1.14
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.14
प्रयोगस्य परम्
prayogasya param
The line
The making belongs to the utterance.
नेपालीमा
बनाउने काम उच्चारणको हो।
Where it sits
This answers karoti in 1.1.8. Prayoga is the employment of the word. The word itself is not the thing said to be made.
Split: prayogasya (प्रयोगस्य) + param (परम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| prayogasya (प्रयोगस्य) | genitive singular, masculine | of the use, of the utterance |
| param (परम्) | nominative singular, neuter | the other thing, the making that was alleged |
The phrases
The objector quoted śabdaṃ (शब्दं) kuru, make a sound. If the word lasts, that sentence asks for a use of the word, not for the manufacture of the word.
Ordinary speech already talks this way. One says 'make a ball of cowdung' and means gather what is already there. Param, the making, belongs to the prayoga.
Sanskrit in this line
Prayoga in this chapter is the employment of a word in speech. The genitive prayogasya limits param, the alleged making.
Say it back
Gloss prayoga as the utterance, and say that 'make' asks for that utterance.
