Where it sits
Śabdapūrvatva (शब्दपूर्वत्व) gathers the innate connection of 1.1.5 and the eternity of the word in 1.1.18. Tu answers the author-objection of 1.1.27 and 1.1.28.
Split: uktam (उक्तम्) + tu (तु) + śabda-pūrvatvam (शब्द-पूर्वत्वम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| uktam (उक्तम्) | nominative singular, neuter | it has been stated |
| tu (तु) | indeclinable | but |
| śabda-pūrvatvam (शब्द-पूर्वत्वम्) | nominative singular, neuter | the priority of the word, the word's being already there |
The phrases
Tu returns to the accepted view. What is needed against a personal maker has been said.
The word is prior to the reciters. Its connection with meaning was not arranged by a person. A named man is not required as the maker of that connection. The replies to the two signs, the branch name and the patronymic, are what remain to be said.
Sanskrit in this line
Uktam is the neuter past participle of vac, it has been said. Pūrvatva (पूर्वत्व) is the state of being prior.
Say it back
Remember the reply in one phrase: the word is already prior. An author is not required to found it.
