1.1.4
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.4
सत्संप्रयोगे पुरुषस्येन्द्रियाणां बुद्धिजन्म तत् प्रत्यक्षमनिमित्तं विद्यमानोपलम्भनत्वात्
satsaṃprayoge puruṣasyendriyāṇāṃ buddhijanma tat pratyakṣam animittaṃ vidyamānopalambhanatvāt
The line
Perception is the arising of a cognition when a person's senses meet something existent, and it is not the cause of knowing dharma (धर्म), because it grasps only what is present.
Where it sits
Nimitta from 1.1.3 is the role being tested. Dharma remains the object of the inquiry. This line removes perception from that role.
Split: sat-saṃprayoge (सत्-संप्रयोगे) + puruṣasya (पुरुषस्य) + indriyāṇām (इन्द्रियाणाम्) + buddhi-janma (बुद्धि-जन्म) + tat (तत्) + pratyakṣam (प्रत्यक्षम्) + animittam (अनिमित्तम्) + vidyamāna-upalambhanatvāt (विद्यमान-उपलम्भनत्वात्)

The phrases
A person's senses meet a thing that is there. From that meeting a cognition arises. That arising is perception.
The same cognition is animitta. It is not the cause sought in the previous line. Perception takes what is already present. Dharma, marked by an injunction, is a thing to be done. It is not sitting in front of the eye.
Sanskrit in this line
Vidyamāna (विद्यमान) is the present participle of vid, what is on hand. Upalambhana is grasping. The pāṭha (पाठ) joins tatpratyakṣam (तत्प्रत्यक्षम्). The line is tat pratyakṣam (प्रत्यक्षम्), that is perception.
Say it back
Say what perception is, and say why it cannot be the nimitta of dharma (धर्म).
