1.1.6
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.6
कर्मैके तत्र दर्शनात्
karmaike tatra darśanāt
The line
Some say the word is a product, because one sees it there, just after the effort.
नेपालीमा
कसैकसैले भन्छन्, शब्द बनेको चीज हो, किनकि प्रयासको लगत्तै त्यहीँ त्यो देखिन्छ।
Where it sits
Śabda (शब्द) from 1.1.5 is the unnamed subject, the thing called karma (कर्म). The innate connection is what fails if the word perishes and is made again. No new subject is named.
Split: karma (कर्म) + eke (एके) + tatra (तत्र) + darśanāt (दर्शनात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| karma (कर्म) | nominative singular, neuter | a product, an act that is made |
| eke (एके) | nominative plural, masculine | some teachers |
| tatra (तत्र) | indeclinable | there, in that case of effort |
| darśanāt (दर्शनात्) | ablative singular, neuter | because of seeing |
The phrases
Eke are the objectors. They say the word is a karma (कर्म). One hears it just after the effort of pronouncing it. From that seeing, they take the effort as what makes the word.
If the word is made each time it is spoken, the connection with meaning cannot be something that was never made. The innate connection of the previous line is what they are attacking. The attack runs through 1.1.11.
Sanskrit in this line
Karma is the nominative singular of karman, same in form as the stem. Karmaike is karma (कर्म) plus eke, a plus e giving ai. Darśanāt (दर्शनात्) is a reason-ablative.
Say it back
State the objection: the word shows up after effort, so some call it a product.
