Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.7

अस्थानात्

asthānāt

The line

Because it does not remain.

नेपालीमा

किनकि त्यो रहँदैन।

Where it sits

The word, and the claim that it is a product, are still in force from 1.1.6. This ablative is another reason for that claim.

Split: asthānāt (अस्थानात्)

The words

WordGrammarSense
asthānāt (अस्थानात्)ablative singular, neuterbecause of not staying, because there is no abiding

The phrases

After the utterance, one does not hear the word for even a short while. The objector calls that a failure to stay, and he calls the word destroyed.

He adds that a thing which exists is not simply unperceived when nothing is blocking the sense. The ear is open, and still the word is gone. So, on his view, it did not survive the speaking.

Sanskrit in this line

Asthāna (अस्थान) is the negation of sthāna (स्थान), standing, remaining. The ablative is a reason-ablative, as darśanāt (दर्शनात्) was.

Say it back

Add this reason: once the speaking stops, the sound is not heard.
