Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.45
संप्रैषे कर्मगर्हानुपालम्भः संस्कारत्वात्
saṃpraiṣe karmagarhānupālambhaḥ saṃskāratvāt
The line
In a prompting formula one does not take up a blame of the act, because the formula is a preparation.
नेपालीमा
प्रेरक मन्त्रमा कर्मको निन्दा लिइँदैन, किनकि त्यो मन्त्र तयारी हो।
Where it sits
This answers the already-understood meaning of 1.2.33, in the special case of the saṃpraiṣa (संप्रैष). Karma is the rite. Saṃskāra (संस्कार) is the preparing of that rite by the spoken formula. The mantra's meaning stays in force.
Split: saṃpraiṣe (संप्रैषे) + karma-garhā-anupālambhaḥ (कर्म-गर्हा-अनुपालम्भः) + saṃskāratvāt (संस्कारत्वात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| saṃpraiṣe (संप्रैषे) | locative singular, masculine | in a prompting formula, the call by which one priest directs another |
| karma-garhā-anupālambhaḥ (कर्म-गर्हा-अनुपालम्भः) | nominative singular, masculine | the not taking up of a blame against the act |
| saṃskāratvāt (संस्कारत्वात्) | ablative singular, neuter | because it is a preparation of the act |
The phrases
The objector said a call such as 'bring the sprinkling-waters near' cannot inform a man who already knows, and so the help must be an unseen result of the bare sound. The sprinkling-waters are the water used to sprinkle and consecrate the materials. A saṃpraiṣa (संप्रैष) is the short direction from one priest to another.
One does not take up that blame against the act. Even when the step is known, memory has a use at the moment of performance. Other ways of remembering exist, so the recited call is a restriction: the step is to be brought to mind by this means. The formula prepares the act. Its words mean the prompt.
Sanskrit in this line
Anupālambha (अनुपालम्भ) is the not-taking-up of garhā (गर्हा), blame. The pāṭha (पाठ) writes saṃskārattvāt (संस्कारत्त्वात्) with a doubled t. The abstract is saṃskāratva (संस्कारत्व), ablative saṃskāratvāt (संस्कारत्वात्).
Say it back
Explain a saṃpraiṣa (संप्रैष) in plain words: one priest tells another to bring the sprinkling-water, and the call recalls the step.
