1.2.9
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.9
अप्राप्ता चानुपपत्तिः प्रयोगे हि विरोधः स्याच् छब्दार्थस् त्वप्रयोगभूतस् तस्मादुपपद्येत
aprāptā cānupapattiḥ prayoge hi virodhaḥ syāc chabdārthas tv aprayogabhūtas tasmād upapadyeta
The line
And the incongruity is not reached, for there would be conflict if these were performed, but the word-meaning is not a thing performed, and therefore it fits.
नेपालीमा
बेमेल पुग्दैन, किनकि यी गरिँदा द्वन्द्व हुन्थ्यो, तर शब्दार्थ गरिने चीज होइन, यसैले मिल्छ।
Where it sits
Prayoga here is the ritual performance. Virodha is the conflict alleged in 1.2.2, now shown not to arise once the words are praise. Stuti from 1.2.7 is what upapadyeta accepts.
Split: aprāptā (अप्राप्ता) + ca (च) + anupapattiḥ (अनुपपत्तिः) + prayoge (प्रयोगे) + hi (हि) + virodhaḥ (विरोधः) + syāt (स्यात्) + śabda-arthaḥ (शब्द-अर्थः) + tu (तु) + aprayoga-bhūtaḥ (अप्रयोग-भूतः) + tasmāt (तस्मात्) + upapadyeta (उपपद्येत)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| aprāptā (अप्राप्ता) | nominative singular, feminine | not reached, not applicable |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
| anupapattiḥ (अनुपपत्तिः) | nominative singular, feminine | incongruity, a failure to fit |
| prayoge (प्रयोगे) | locative singular, masculine | in the performance, if it were a step to be done |
| hi (हि) | indeclinable | for |
| virodhaḥ (विरोधः) | nominative singular, masculine | conflict |
| syāt (स्यात्) | optative, third person singular, active | there would be |
| śabda-arthaḥ (शब्द-अर्थः) | nominative singular, masculine | the meaning of the words |
| tu (तु) | indeclinable | but |
| aprayoga-bhūtaḥ (अप्रयोग-भूतः) | nominative singular, masculine | not become an item of the performance |
| tasmāt (तस्मात्) | ablative singular, neuter | therefore |
| upapadyeta (उपपद्येत) | optative, third person singular, middle | it would fit |
The phrases
The incongruity alleged from conflict does not arrive for 'he wept' and the sentences like it. A conflict would arise if theft, lying, or the losing of the directions were steps in the performance.
The meaning of the words has not become a step. 'The mind is a thief, speech speaks falsehood' is not an item on the list of things the sacrificer does. Therefore the praise reading fits. The words do their work without being added to the rite.
Sanskrit in this line
The pāṭha (पाठ) reads āptā (आप्ता), met with. The bhāṣya (भाष्य) reads aprāptā (अप्राप्ता), not reached, and says the incongruity does not apply. Aprāptā (अप्राप्ता) agrees with anupapattiḥ (अनुपपत्तिः). Syāt (स्यात्) before śabda (शब्द) is recited syāc (स्याच्), and the s of śabda (शब्द) is heard as ch.
Say it back
Explain why 'the mind is a thief' is not a ritual step, and why the sentence still fits as praise.

1.2.10. When the praise names something other than the enjoined thing, the words are figurative.
