1.2.8
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.8
तुल्यं च साम्प्रदायिकम्
tulyaṃ ca sāmpradāyikam
The line
And the traditional teaching is the same.
नेपालीमा
र परम्पराको शिक्षा उही हो।
Where it sits
The stuti reading of 1.2.7 is what tulyam compares. The sentences joined to vidhi are still the subject. Tradition is cited as agreeing that both kinds of wording are kept on purpose.
Split: tulyam (तुल्यम्) + ca (च) + sāmpradāyikam (साम्प्रदायिकम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tulyam (तुल्यम्) | nominative singular, neuter | the same, matching |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
| sāmpradāyikam (साम्प्रदायिकम्) | nominative singular, neuter | what belongs to the tradition of teachers |
The phrases
Someone might say the injunctive words are complete by themselves, and the praise words are a careless reading that crept into the text.
That is refused. Learning, the relation of teacher and pupil, and the care taken so that nothing is lost, are the same for the injunctive words and for the praise words. The memory of both is firm. What the tradition treats alike was not kept by accident.
Sanskrit in this line
Sāmpradāyika (साम्प्रदायिक) is the adjective of sampradāya (सम्प्रदाय), a succession of teaching. Tulyam is neuter, the same thing.
Say it back
Add the tradition: teachers recite the praise with the same care as the command.
