1.3.10
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.10
चोदितं तु प्रतीयेताविरोधात् प्रमाणेन
coditaṃ tu pratīyetāvirodhāt pramāṇena
The line
But what even outsiders indicate is to be understood, when a means of knowing does not contradict it.
नेपालीमा
तर बाहिरकाहरूले देखाएको कुरा पनि बुझ्नुपर्छ, जब जान्ने साधनले त्यसलाई काट्दैन।
Where it sits
The text-ground of 1.3.9 is not cancelled. coditam is a meaning already in use, as against a meaning only built from a root. avirodhāt (अविरोधात्) pramāṇena (प्रमाणेन) keeps the conflict rule of 1.3.3: a real means of knowing still wins.
Split: coditam (चोदितम्) + tu (तु) + pratīyeta (प्रतीयेत) + avirodhāt (अविरोधात्) + pramāṇena (प्रमाणेन)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| coditam (चोदितम्) | nominative singular, neuter | what has been indicated |
| tu (तु) | indeclinable | but |
| pratīyeta (प्रतीयेत) | third person singular, optative, passive, of prati-i | it should be understood |
| avirodhāt (अविरोधात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because there is no contradiction |
| pramāṇena (प्रमाणेन) | instrumental singular, neuter | by a means of knowing |
The phrases
Some words the Āryas (आर्य) do not apply to any thing, and outsiders do. pika, nema, sata, tāmarasa (तामरस). The first view builds a meaning from the root, with lexicon, etymology, and grammar, because the trained man's practice was made a ground and the outsider was not.
The decision is the other way. What is indicated, even by the untrained, is understood when a means of knowing does not contradict it. A meaning that is actually grasped is not to be dropped.
Men who keep and cage birds are more practiced at that work. So pika is the cuckoo as they use it. nema is a half. tāmarasa (तामरस) is the lotus. sata is a round wooden vessel with a hundred holes. Root and grammar still have work where no usage has fixed a meaning. Built from the root alone, a meaning would never settle.
Sanskrit in this line
pratīyeta (प्रतीयेत) plus avirodhāt (अविरोधात्) is heard as pratīyetāvirodhāt (प्रतीयेताविरोधात्). The ā (आ) is e plus a. coditam is neuter and is the subject of pratīyeta (प्रतीयेत).
Say it back
Give pika as the cuckoo, nema as a half, tāmarasa (तामरस) as the lotus, and sata as the hundred-holed wooden vessel.
