1.3.11
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.11
प्रयोगशास्त्रमिति चेत्
prayogaśāstram iti cet
The line
If you say that a manual of performance is thereby authoritative, that is the objection.
नेपालीमा
यदि त्यसैले कर्म गर्ने पुस्तिका प्रमाण हुन्छ भन्छौ भने, त्यो आक्षेप हो।
Where it sits
pramāṇa (प्रमाण) from the memory lines is the status being tested. These manuals are a new kind of text. They are not the remembered rules of dharma (धर्म), and they are not the outsider's words of 1.3.10. iti cet marks the objection, as it did for the practices.
Split: prayoga-śāstram (प्रयोग-शास्त्रम्) + iti (इति) + cet (चेत्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| prayoga-śāstram (प्रयोग-शास्त्रम्) | nominative singular, neuter | a manual of the performance |
| iti (इति) | indeclinable | thus |
| cet (चेत्) | indeclinable | if |
The phrases
The examples are the manuals of Māśaka (माशक), of Hāstika (हास्तिक), and of Kauṇḍinya (कौण्डिन्य). The doubt is whether they are a means of knowing.
The objector says a work of this kind is the teaching of the performance, and so it is a means of knowing. The cups in them are the cups of the Veda, and the bricks are the bricks of the Veda. He takes the teachers as speakers of truth. He quotes a line that the teacher's word is a ground. People regard these sentences with the same care as Vedic sentences.
Sanskrit in this line
The line has no verb. pramāṇam (प्रमाणम्) syāt (स्यात्) is understood from the earlier turns. prayogaśāstram (प्रयोगशास्त्रम्) is one compound, neuter, naming the manual as a teaching of how the rite is performed.
Say it back
Name the manuals of Māśaka (माशक), Hāstika (हास्तिक), and Kauṇḍinya (कौण्डिन्य) as the texts the objector wants to count.
Next
1.3.12. The manuals are not authoritative, because nothing binds them as Vedic composition.
