1.3.14

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.14

सर्वत्र च प्रयोगात् सन्निधानशास्त्राच् च

sarvatra ca prayogāt sannidhānaśāstrāc ca

The line

And because the rite is performed everywhere by the text at hand, a manual that contradicts that text is not a means of knowing.

र कर्म जताततै हातको पाठले गरिने भएकाले त्यो पाठलाई काट्ने पुस्तिका जान्ने साधन होइन।

Where it sits

The second ca continues the refusal of 1.3.12 and 1.3.13. prayoga is the performance the objector appealed to in prayogaśāstram (प्रयोगशास्त्रम्). sannidhānaśāstra (सन्निधानशास्त्र) is the Vedic sentence actually present, and it wins as the heard text won in 1.3.3.

Split: sarvatra (सर्वत्र) + ca (च) + prayogāt (प्रयोगात्) + sannidhāna-śāstrāt (सन्निधान-शास्त्रात्) + ca (च)

The phrases

A manual line says the new-moon day falls on every date. The text at hand says one should sacrifice with the full-moon rite on the full-moon day, and with the new-moon rite on the new-moon day.

Men perform those rites by those days. The performance everywhere follows the text that is present. The manual sentence conflicts with that heard text. The teachers are not shown to be speakers of truth, and the manual is not a means of knowing.

Sanskrit in this line

sannidhāna (सन्निधान) writes the dental n of sam before ni. śāstrāt (शास्त्रात्) before ca is heard as śāstrāc (शास्त्राच्). The two ablatives are one ground: performance, and the text beside it.

Say it back

Contrast the manual's new moon on every date with the heard full-moon day and new-moon day.
