1.3.15

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.15

अनुमानव्यवस्थानात् तत्संयुक्तं प्रमाणं स्यात्

anumānavyavasthānāt tatsaṃyuktaṃ pramāṇaṃ syāt

The line

Because the inference has a limit, only the practice connected with those people would be a means of knowing.

नेपालीमा

अनुमानको सीमा भएकाले ती मानिससँग जोडिएको आचार मात्र जान्ने साधन हुनेछ।

Where it sits

anumāna (अनुमान) is the inference of a Vedic root from 1.3.2 and 1.3.7. vyavasthānāt (व्यवस्थानात्) says that inference arrives already limited. tatsaṃyuktam (तत्संयुक्तम्) is the practice joined to the people who keep it. This is the first view. The decision comes next.

Split: anumāna-vyavasthānāt (अनुमान-व्यवस्थानात्) + tad-saṃyuktam (तद्-संयुक्तम्) + pramāṇam (प्रमाणम्) + syāt (स्यात्)

The phrases

Memory and practice were made means of knowing by inference. On this view they are authoritative only inside the limit of that inference.

So the Holākā (होलाका) observance would be for easterners alone. The Āhnīnaibuka (आह्नीनैबुक) and the rites grouped with it would be for southerners alone. The sacrifice named from the bull would be for northerners alone. The topknot is offered as a parallel: some wear three locks, some five.

Sanskrit in this line

tatsaṃyuktam (तत्संयुक्तम्) agrees with pramāṇam (प्रमाणम्). Both are nominative singular, neuter. The line names Holākā (होलाका), the Āhnīnaibuka (आह्नीनैबुक) group, and the bull sacrifice only to place them by region. It does not describe their steps.

Say it back

Place Holākā (होलाका) in the east, the Āhnīnaibuka (आह्नीनैबुक) group in the south, and the bull sacrifice in the north, as the first view does.
