1.3.17

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.17

दर्शनाद् विनियोगः स्यात्

darśanād viniyogaḥ syāt

The line

The allotment of the topknot would come from a seen family usage, not from a regional limit on dharma (धर्म).

नेपालीमा

शिखाको बाँडफाँड देखिएको कुलचलनबाट आउनेछ, धर्मको क्षेत्रीय सीमाबाट होइन।

Where it sits

The topknot was the parallel offered in 1.3.15 against sarvadharmaḥ (सर्वधर्मः). darśanāt (दर्शनात्) answers that parallel. viniyogaḥ (विनियोगः) is the assigning of this one practice, not a new injunction.

Split: darśanāt (दर्शनात्) + viniyogaḥ (विनियोगः) + syāt (स्यात्)

The phrases

The objector said the topknot arranges itself by group, some with three locks and some with five, so a regional rite could be limited in the same way.

The allotment of the topknot comes from what is seen. What is seen is the family line, the gotra. That is a visible family usage. It does not become the pattern for Holākā (होलाका).

Sanskrit in this line

The line is three words. gotra is Śabara (शबर)'s gloss of what is seen. It is not in the sūtra (सूत्र). The sūtra (सूत्र) only says the allotment comes from seeing.

Say it back

Say that the locks follow the family line that one sees, and do not regionalize Holākā (होलाका).
