1.3.16

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.16

अपि वा सर्वधर्मः स्यात् तन्न्यायत्वाद् विधानस्य

api vā sarvadharmaḥ syāt tannyāyatvād vidhānasya

The line

Or rather, it would be a dharma (धर्म) for all, because that is the proper reach of an injunction.

नेपालीमा

बरु त्यो सबैका लागि धर्म हुनेछ, किनकि त्यो नै विधिको उचित पहुँच हो।

Where it sits

The regional limit of 1.3.15 is what api vā (वा) turns. sarvadharmaḥ (सर्वधर्मः) is the decision for Holākā (होलाका) and the other named observances. The topknot parallel is left for the next line.

Split: api (अपि) + vā (वा) + sarva-dharmaḥ (सर्व-धर्मः) + syāt (स्यात्) + tad-nyāyatvāt (तद्-न्यायत्वात्) + vidhānasya (विधानस्य)

tad-nyāyatvāt (तद्-न्यायत्वात्)ablative singular, neuterbecause of having that as its proper reach
vidhānasya (विधानस्य)genitive singular, neuterof the enjoining word

The phrases

api vā (वा) turns the view. A practice of this kind would be dharma (धर्म) for all.

vidhāna (विधान) is the enjoining word inferred from the memory. It is not right that the inferred word should name a class of easterners, or one man. There is no such word to infer. There is a ground that the acts are to be done. There is no ground for cutting them up by region.

Sanskrit in this line

The pāṭha (पाठ) splits sarvadharmaḥ (सर्वधर्मः) into sarva and dharmaḥ (धर्मः). It is one compound. tannyāyatvāt (तन्न्यायत्वात्) is tat plus nyāyatvāt (न्यायत्वात्), and d before n is heard as n. The ablative loses t before vidhānasya (विधानस्य) and is heard as tannyāyatvād (तन्न्यायत्वाद्).

Say it back

Say that the inferred injunction addresses whoever may act, not one region.
