1.3.22

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.22

कर्मधर्मो वा प्रवणवत्

karmadharmo vā pravaṇavat

The line

Or the place would be a property of the rite, as the eastern slope is for the Vaiśvadeva (वैश्वदेव).

नेपालीमा

वा ठाउँ कर्मको गुण हुनेछ, जसरी पूर्वी ढाल वैश्वदेवको हो।

Where it sits

vā (वा) offers a new ground after the name has failed in 1.3.21. karma (कर्म) is the rite one is still trying to restrict. The Vaiśvadeva (वैश्वदेव) on the eastern slope is the objector's model, not a description of Holākā (होलाका).

Split: karma-dharmaḥ (कर्म-धर्मः) + vā (वा) + pravaṇa-vat (प्रवण-वत्)

The phrases

A further try: the place is a limb of the action. The country that is mostly black soil would then be the place of the Āhnīnaibuka (आह्नीनैबुक) group.

The model is a heard line: one should sacrifice with the Vaiśvadeva (वैश्वदेव) on ground that slopes to the east. There the slope is a property of that rite.

Sanskrit in this line

karmadharmaḥ (कर्मधर्मः) before vā (वा) is heard as karmadharmo. pravaṇavat (प्रवणवत्) is an indeclinable with vat, like māthuravat (माथुरवत्). The slope word is pravaṇa (प्रवण), a slope, and prācīna (प्राचीन) in Śabara (शबर)'s example makes it the eastern one.

Say it back

State the new try: black soil would belong to the southern rites, on the model of the eastern slope for the Vaiśvadeva (वैश्वदेव).
