1.3.23
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.23
तुल्यं तु कर्तृधर्मेण
tulyaṃ tu kartṛdharmeṇa
The line
But the place is in the same position as a property of the agent, and it does not restrict the rite.
नेपालीमा
तर ठाउँ कर्ताको गुणसरह छ, र त्यसले कर्म सीमित गर्दैन।
Where it sits
tu answers karmadharmaḥ (कर्मधर्मः) of 1.3.22. kartṛdharma (कर्तृधर्म) is the bodily mark already refused in 1.3.18. tulyam says the soil fares no better. With this, the regional limit of 1.3.15 is closed. The practices stand for all, as 1.3.16 said.
Split: tulyam (तुल्यम्) + tu (तु) + kartṛ-dharmeṇa (कर्तृ-धर्मेण)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tulyam (तुल्यम्) | nominative singular, neuter | the same |
| tu (तु) | indeclinable | but |
| kartṛ-dharmeṇa (कर्तृ-धर्मेण) | instrumental singular, masculine | with a property of the agent |
The phrases
A property of the agent, such as dark, did not stay fixed, and it did not match the acts. A property of the place is the same.
Some do not perform the rites even where the soil is black. Some perform them where the soil has another look. So there is no restriction by country. The eastern slope of the Vaiśvadeva (वैश्वदेव) is fixed by direct text. That is not this soil.
Sanskrit in this line
tulyam is neuter nominative. The thing it describes is the place-mark, carried from 1.3.22, not named again. kartṛdharmeṇa (कर्तृधर्मेण) is the instrumental of comparison.
Say it back
Say that black soil does not decide the rite, just as the body's look did not, and that the eastern slope is a heard rule of its own.

1.3.24. On the first view, no rule fixes one word as correct, because usage has no text of origin.
