Where it sits
tatra is the choice among go and its corruptions, from 1.3.26. tattvam is which form is the real word. abhiyoga is the care already used, in 1.3.10, to say that trained men attend to meanings. Here it attends to the sound.
Split: tatra (तत्र) + tattvam (तत्त्वम्) + abhiyoga-viśeṣāt (अभियोग-विशेषात्) + syāt (स्यात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tatra (तत्र) | indeclinable | in that matter |
| tattvam (तत्त्वम्) | nominative singular, neuter | the true form |
| abhiyoga-viśeṣāt (अभियोग-विशेषात्) | ablative singular, masculine | from a special care |
| syāt (स्यात्) | third person singular, optative, of the verb as | it would be |
The phrases
How is the true form known? Men who want the meaning are careful. Careful men who repeat a form do not drop it. What is being kept with care is seen not to fall away.
So the form the careful teachers teach is the correct word. That is how go is kept, and gāvī (गावी) is not given the same place.
Sanskrit in this line
tattvam is tad plus tva, nominative neuter, the being-that, the real form. abhiyogaviśeṣāt (अभियोगविशेषात्) is an ablative of source, not a second predicate.
Say it back
Say that the correct word is the one careful reciters teach and do not let slip.
