1.3.28
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.28
तदशक्तिश् चानुरूपत्वात्
tadaśaktiś cānurūpatvāt
The line
And the corrupt form lacks power of its own, because it only conforms to the true word.
नेपालीमा
र बिग्रेको रूपको आफ्नै शक्ति छैन, किनकि त्यो साँचो शब्दलाई मात्र पछ्याउँछ।
Where it sits
tad points at gāvī (गावी) and the other corruptions of 1.3.26. ca adds the lack of power to the care of 1.3.27. anurūpatvāt (अनुरूपत्वात्) is why a hearer still understands. The understanding does not make the corrupt form a word.
Split: tad-aśaktiḥ (तद्-अशक्तिः) + ca (च) + anurūpatvāt (अनुरूपत्वात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tad-aśaktiḥ (तद्-अशक्तिः) | nominative singular, feminine | its lack of power |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
| anurūpatvāt (अनुरूपत्वात्) | ablative singular, neuter | because of conforming to the true word |
The phrases
The objector said the meaning is understood from gāvī (गावी) too, so gāvī (गावी) also has a beginningless connection. The answer is that these forms have no power of their own.
Someone meaning to say go says gāvī (गावी) from inability. Another understands that the dewlap-bearing animal was meant, and, wanting to say go, also says gāvī (गावी). Later hearers do the same. The meaning comes because gāvī (गावी) lies close to go, not because gāvī (गावी) is a second word.
Sanskrit in this line
tadaśaktiḥ (तदशक्तिः) before ca is heard as tadaśaktiś (तदशक्तिश्), and ca before a as cā (चा). aśakti (अशक्ति) is the privative of śakti (शक्ति). The compound's tad is the corrupt form, not the meaning.
Say it back
Say that gāvī (गावी) denotes only by sitting close to go, and has no denotation of its own.

1.3.29. A wrong ending is still understood, because part of the true word was heard.
