1.3.3

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.3

विरोधे त्वनपेक्ष्यं स्यादसति ह्यनुमानम्

virodhe tv anapekṣyaṃ syād asati hy anumānam

The line

But in a conflict the memory is not to be regarded, for the inference is absent when a Vedic root cannot be there.

नेपालीमा

तर द्वन्द्वमा स्मृति मान्नु हुँदैन, किनकि वैदिक जरो हुन नसक्दा अनुमान हुँदैन।

Where it sits

The inference of 1.3.2 is still the only ground memory has. asati says that ground is missing. tu limits the acceptance just given. The three conflicts are the matter of this line.

Split: virodhe (विरोधे) + tu (तु) + anapekṣyam (अनपेक्ष्यम्) + syāt (स्यात्) + asati (असति) + hi (हि) + anumānam (अनुमानम्)

The phrases

The memory says wrap the whole udumbara post in cloth. The heard text says he should sing after touching the post. He cannot touch a post that is wholly wrapped, and he cannot wrap it all while he must touch it and sing.

Studentship for forty-eight years conflicts with setting the fires when a son has been born and the hair is still black. Not eating the food of a king who was bought conflicts with eating in the sacrificer's house once the offering to Agni and Soma is completed.

One might treat the two as an option, as rice and barley are an option. That fails. An option would grant the heard text its force on one side and take it away on the other. The heard text is not optional. Once it stands, no Vedic sentence can be inferred for the conflicting memory. The memory is a confusion.

Sanskrit in this line

The pāṭha (पाठ) has anapekṣyam (अनपेक्ष्यम्), the gerundive, nominative neuter. Śabara (शबर)'s sūtra (सूत्र) text reads anapekṣam (अनपेक्षम्), as in 1.3.1. The decision is the same either way: the conflicting memory is left aside. syāt (स्यात्) before asati is heard as syād (स्याद्), and hi before anumānam (अनुमानम्) as hy.

Say it back

Give the wrapped post, the forty-eight years, and the bought king's food, and say the heard text stays.

1.3.4. A conflicting memory is also set aside because a motive for it is seen.
