Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.4

hetudarśanāc ca
The line
And the conflicting memory falls because a worldly motive for it is seen.

लौकिक प्रयोजन देखिएकाले बाझिने स्मृति खस्छ।
Where it sits
virodhe from 1.3.3 is still the situation. ca adds a second ground to asati. hetu is the motive that blocks the inference of a Vedic sentence.
Split: hetu-darśanāt (हेतु-दर्शनात्) + ca (च)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| hetu-darśanāt (हेतु-दर्शनात्) | ablative singular, neuter | because a motive is seen |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
The phrases
Some, wanting the cloth, wrapped the whole udumbara post. Some, being hungry, ate the food of the bought king. Some, hiding a lack of manhood, kept the student life for forty-eight years. That conduct is the seed of the memory.
This is easier to see than a Vedic sentence invented to match the memory. The same point reaches a gift. At the closing offering the adhvaryu takes a garment, and people give to the man who holds the post. The authors are the same kind of men, so one might infer a text. The motive is greed.
Sanskrit in this line
hetudarśanāt (हेतुदर्शनात्) is an ablative of cause. Before ca the final t is heard as c.
Say it back
Name greed, hunger, and concealment as motives that stop the inference.
