1.4.19

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.4.19

तच्छेषो नोपपद्यते

taccheṣo nopapadyate

The line

Its being a remainder of that injunction does not fit.

नेपालीमा

त्यो त्यो विधिको शेष हो भन्ने कुरा मिल्दैन।

Where it sits

tat is the twelve-potsherd injunction of 1.4.17. śeṣaḥ (शेषः) is the tail that 1.4.18 wanted the eight to be. na upapadyate is the objector's block. The Vaiśvānara (वैश्वानर) sentence is still the whole passage under discussion.

Split: tat-śeṣaḥ (तत्-शेषः) + na (न) + upapadyate (उपपद्यते)

The phrases

The objection is that a remainder of the twelve-potsherd sentence does not fit. That sentence states twelve. These lines speak of eight. How is praise of eight a tail of twelve?

Śabara (शबर) marks the line as what has to be answered. The answer is the next line. This line is the difficulty, not the close.

Sanskrit in this line

tat plus śeṣaḥ (शेषः) is heard as taccheṣaḥ (तच्छेषः), t plus ś (श्) becoming cch. śeṣaḥ (शेषः) plus na is heard as śeṣo (शेषो) na, and na plus upapadyate as nopapadyate. The line is one clause.

Say it back

State the difficulty: praise of eight seems not to be a tail of a sentence that says twelve.

Next

1.4.20. Eight sits inside twelve, so praise of the part praises what is enjoined.
