1.4.20

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.4.20

अविभागाद् विधानार्थे स्तुत्यर्थेनोपपद्येरन्

avibhāgād vidhānārthe stutyarthenopapadyeran

The line

Because the smaller number is not divided out of the enjoined number, the lines fit as praise.

नेपालीमा

सानो सङ्ख्या विहित सङ्ख्याबाट छुट्याइने नभएकाले ती पङ्क्ति स्तुतिमा मिल्छन्।

Where it sits

This answers taccheṣaḥ (तच्छेषः) na upapadyate of 1.4.19. vidhānārthe (विधानार्थे) is the twelve that was enjoined. stutyarthena is the use 1.4.18 already chose. avibhāgāt (अविभागात्) says eight is included, so the tail does fit.

Split: avibhāgāt (अविभागात्) + vidhāna-arthe (विधान-अर्थे) + stuti-arthena (स्तुति-अर्थेन) + upapadyeran (उपपद्येरन्)

upapadyeran (उपपद्येरन्)third person plural, optative, middle, of upa-padthey would fit

The phrases

Once the lines are not useful as separate commands, they praise the twelve by a secondary reach, and that praise commends the Vaiśvānara (वैश्वानर) offering.

Eight and the other numbers are not divided out of twelve. They sit inside it. Praise of the part fits as praise of what is enjoined. One praises the wheel by praising its rim and its hub. One praises the army by praising its elephants, horses, chariots, and foot. So the praise fits.

Sanskrit in this line

avibhāgāt (अविभागात्) before v is heard as avibhāgād (अविभागाद्). stutyarthena plus upapadyeran is heard as stutyarthenopapadyeran, a plus u becoming o. The optative plural picks up the several number-lines, not a new subject.

Say it back

Say that eight is inside twelve, so praise of eight praises the twelve-potsherd offering.
