Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.8
करोति शब्दात्
karoti śabdāt
The line
Because of the expression 'he makes.'
नेपालीमा
बनाउँछ भन्ने उक्तिका कारण।
Where it sits
The same objection continues. The word under debate is still the subject. Karoti is quoted as evidence about that word. It is not a ritual verb.
Split: karoti (करोति) + śabdāt (शब्दात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| karoti (करोति) | present, third person singular, active, cited as the quoted verb | he makes |
| śabdāt (शब्दात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because of that word, because of the expression |
The phrases
People say śabdaṃ (शब्दं) kuru, make a sound, and mā (मा) śabdaṃ (शब्दं) kārṣīḥ (कार्षीः), do not make a sound. The verb is a verb of making.
The objector takes that usage as evidence. What speakers tell one another to make is, on his view, not a thing that was already there.
Sanskrit in this line
The two words quote an expression and then give the reason in the ablative: because of the word karoti. Śabda (शब्द) here is the citing word, the expression, not a second claim that the word is an ablative thing.
Say it back
Remember the quoted verb. People say the speaker makes the sound.
