1.1.9
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.9
सत्त्वान्तरे च यौगपद्यात्
sattvāntare ca yaugapadyāt
The line
And because of its occurring at the same time in another person.
नेपालीमा
र त्यो अर्को व्यक्तिमा एकै समयमा हुने भएकाले।
Where it sits
Ca adds this to the reasons in 1.1.6 through 1.1.8. The subject is still the word. Yaugapadya will be answered by the example of the sun.
Split: sattva-antare (सत्त्व-अन्तरे) + ca (च) + yaugapadyāt (यौगपद्यात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| sattva-antare (सत्त्व-अन्तरे) | locative singular, neuter | in another being, in another place where a person is |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
| yaugapadyāt (यौगपद्यात्) | ablative singular, neuter | because of simultaneity |
The phrases
People in different places hear a word at the same time. The objector says one eternal word cannot be in many places at once, if there is no difference to split it.
Many products, each made in its own place, can be heard together. He takes that as a further reason for calling the word a product.
Sanskrit in this line
Sattva here is a being. Antara makes it another being. Yaugapadya is the abstract, occurring together.
Say it back
State the objection from simultaneity: hearers in different places have the word at one time.
