1.3.33

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.33

आकृतिस् तु क्रियार्थत्वात्

ākṛtis tu kriyārthatvāt

The line

But the meaning is the class-form, because the word is for the sake of an action.

नेपालीमा

तर अर्थ आकृति हो, किनकि शब्द कर्मका लागि हो।

Where it sits

tu turns 1.3.31 and 1.3.32. ākṛtiḥ (आकृतिः) is the meaning that arthaikatvam of 1.3.30 was waiting for. kriyārthatvāt (क्रियार्थत्वात्) puts the word under the action, which is what an injunction can command more than once.

Split: ākṛtiḥ (आकृतिः) + tu (तु) + kriyā-arthatvāt (क्रिया-अर्थत्वात्)

The phrases

tu turns the view. The meaning is the class-form. The reason is that the word serves an action.

He should pile the altar that is piled in the form of a hawk. That sentence can be carried out if hawk means the form common to hawks. Piling cannot produce one individual hawk that has already lived. If the word meant that one hawk, the sentence would command what cannot be done.

A word that meant only one individual would not be used of the next individual. It is used of the next. The meaning that the action can meet again is the form.

Sanskrit in this line

ākṛtiḥ (आकृतिः) before tu is heard as ākṛtis (आकृति). kriyārthatvāt (क्रियार्थत्वात्) is kriyā (क्रिया) plus arthatva. The hawk sentence is śyenacitaṃ (श्येनचितं) cinvīta (चिन्वीत). It decides the meaning of the word hawk. It does not here describe the layers of the altar.

Say it back

Say that hawk in the piling means the hawk-form, because an action can repeat that form and cannot repeat one dead bird.

1.3.34. Three objections: the act would fail, another thing is enjoined, and the word would not name a substance.
